Studs: Austin Daye continues to shine. He was fantastic again today for the Detroit Pistons scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Daye clearly has to add some muscle over the course of his first couple of NBA seasons, but he's looking like a player who could be special down the line for Detroit. Jonas Jerebko also played a very solid game for Detroit scoring 19 points and grabbing five boards.

– Austin was the story of this Daye. Bad joke? Maybe. Serious game? Absolutely. He has been making his case (a la Kevin Durant) to disprove that the NBA’s bench press test mean’s completely nothing when you are a skilled guy standing 6-10 and above. Daye has been a mismatch nightmare, taking bigger forwards off of the bounce and simply shooting over smaller forwards. The production backs that up, as seen by his 20 and 10 performance tonight. Yes, he’s still weak and very foul prone against stronger guys. However, he’s proven that he is going to be a nightmare to guard given his ball skills at 6-11 and could very wind up being one of the biggest steals of this draft.
– Second round pick DaJuan Summers had an up and down game. On one hand, he showed flashes of how versatile he could be due to his ability to play either forward slot. On the other hand, he showed his lack of discipline both in terms of shot selection and defensive fundamentals. The defensive part was evident, as seen by his 10 personal fouls. There’s still a whole lot of promise left in the former Georgetown star, and Detorit fans shouldn’t be worried by his one lackluster summer league performance and forget the 18 points per game he’s averaging.
– Swedish forward Jonas Jerebko got it done bigtime with his unorthodox style of play. He knocked down a number of jumpers from mid-range, stepped out to the three point line, and even got to the basket against more athletic wings. The guy has the pretty boy look, but definitely backs it up with some serious game. Jerebko is definitely going to need to get stronger both physically and as a defender before he’s ready to crack the rotation seriously though.
– Ex-Virginia Tech high-flyer Deron Washington turned some heads with an unbelievable tip-dunk as well as a couple attempted (but failed) posterizations. He made some super athletic plays and there’s a ton of Sports Center top 10s waiting to happen, but he just doesn’t have the skills yet to back it up.

Pistons Austin Daye has been one of the top performers thus far in the NBA Summer League and on Day 8 he was good for 20 points and 10 rips. "I think I played really well. I had a game where I struggled but I bounced back." Daye said of his performance this week. "We played really well as a team and won 4 out of 5 games. I'm really happy about that."
Daye finished the summer league with averages of 17 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. The Pistons first-round pick finished strong with three double-doubles in the last three games.

or Austin Daye, the summer league experience couldn't have gone any better. Not only was Daye one of the best performers at the summer league, but he had his moment where he could tell all of his doubters to shut up. Daye played 34 minutes a game, shot a solid 47% from the field, and averaged about nine rebounds and 17 points again. Everyone that was in attendance in Las Vegas came away very impressed with Daye, commenting that he could not only withstand contact but often times he initiated it and it never really bothered him. His one major struggle was in the turnover department where he struggled from time to time but that it is too be expected and was probably a result of nerves combined with the different style of game. The most exciting part for Daye is that he is on a team that should be a power in the future. Along with him, DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko are both rookies that impressed in the summer league. It's safe to say that Daye will have more of an immediate impact in the NBA than most people initially thought. The fun part about the Detroit Pistons summer league team was that Austin Daye was joined by Jeremy Pargo. Pargo played for the Orlando Magic in the Orlando summer league a few weeks ago but joined the Pistons in Vegas. Jeremy did a lot to improve his position in Las Vegas. The former Gonzaga court general averaged 10 points a game in only 18 minutes per game. He shot 50% from the field and really impressed the Pistons fans and it isn't completely crazy to think that Jeremy could find a spot on their roster. The Pistons were auditioning guards for a third-string spot on the roster and many think it became a battle between Jeremy and former Virginia Cavalier Sean Singletary. They both had very similar stat lines for Detroit and I feel like Jeremy has more NBA ready size. You have to wonder if Detroit passes on Jeremy because they have a player kind of similar to him in Will Bynum.

It's fun to see our rookies doing so well,but I don't want to be very excited about them.Ok let's remember that our rookies are playing their level guys + and -.It will be very a different story when you get Melo/Lebron...evan Al Thornton as for now our guys got other rookies and want to be in a team D-League players.

Cautious optimism is good, but when was the last time that our draft picks did even this well in the Summer League?

Wow now that just depressed the hell outta me.

Although its not like the summer league is the end all be all for telling if a guy can make it in the NBA. Just take a look at what guards made first team and second team, and then look at the 3rd team guard. I think I would trade every player on that list for that last 3rd team guard.

I agree. Maybe it's revisionist history on my part, but I don't remember such consistent performances from those guys compared to what we saw from our guys this time around.
