Jazz are a half game behind the Lakers now for the final playoff spot.
Pistons are ready to play some tough defense to thwart their playoff hopes.

Jazz are actually flopping pretty hard, but the Pistons are on a mission.

I see no need to keep around any of the coaches on this staff after this season. You can't coach certain things like talent, but you can out people in position to succeed, and you can coach people to buy into a defensive philosophy, and we are hapless.

You can coach all the defensive philosophy in the world, but if you are putting Monroe, Maxiel, Stuckey, Villenueva, Singler, etc. on the floor, it ain't going to matter.

Lawrence Frank has been out for a week. The Pistons haven't won a game this month. Problems go WAY deeper than this coaching staff.

The BK7 sprained ankle will give Bynum and Stuckey more PT....ensuring a top 5 draft pick for the team.

This is the year we break away from the pack. We magically went from outrebounding teams by 10 to getting mauled day in and out. BK7 is sidelined until after the seemingly unloseable Bobcats game. Its brilliant!

Bynum. Could not defend, could not even begin to defend, an outside shot. Coach Hill took him out a few moments later, but the damage was done.

Middleton had a pretty nice game. But note, if Bynum is on the floor, he calls his own shot at every opportunity. No Bynum would mean a lot more shots from a guy like Middleton who can actually make the shots.

Still no Kim English. Yea, sure, Knight is injured. But that still leaves Bynum and Stuckey to run next to Calderon pretending to be shooting guards. Still a bad setup. Indeed, this coaching staff is so bad, we would have to lose 9 more players before they would stumble upon playing an actual shooting guard to start the game. (English.)

Bynum was just minus 11. How can that hurt? He is always minus, and the coaching staff just does not care. He can't defend his position, and the coaching staff just does not care. He is too old to ever be a part of the Pistons' future, and the Pistons org. just does not care. What does Dumars care about - cap space. Sure, Calderon is a fine player. But no way he will stick around for this mess of a team, where the coaches will very seldom give him guys who can shoot to run the floor with him. They did bring both Middleton and CV in late in the first, but that was after 10 minutes wasted. And if you see Middleton in the game, here comes Bynum to mess everything up by calling his own number time after time.

Knight went out. The other coach made the right decision for us, putting Kravtsov in the game. That gives a pretty good unit with two bigs up front, at least some shooters in the game with them. (Though Singler and JJ between them can't shoot that well. Compared to what we could use, English and Middleton, absolutely no shot at all.) Of course, next stoppage in play, out comes Kravtsov and in comes Stuckey, who can't play shooting guard for a second. He did make one triple though. Wait to next month, he will probably make another.

Did you notice they kept Middleton completely smothered when he was out on the perimeter. Gee, that is spreading the floor. If only the coaching staff had half a clue and added English.

Here is a unit that could work. Nothing new.

Calderon, English, Middleton, CV, Monroe. CV being the only week defender here, could be covered well enough by the other 4 guys to make the defense work. On offense, the floor is spread 100%, so Calderon can drive in all he wants and Monroe never would face a packed lane. Ever. Gee, if only we had an NBA level coaching staff. Or one that cared at all.

Calderon was on tonight on his shot. Probably should have taken over the game a bit more, but its just not his style. One thing good about Stuckey, he does not do those heat checks like Knight to waste our possessions.

Monroe had a very respectable double double, and held their center in check pretty well. He certainly is not part of the problem. Except who told him to launch an outside shot in crunch time. That is not knowing what is going on.

No, there is no lack of effort by the players. That is a myth the players are told to enforce to the media. The coaches just stink. We have fine players, who can win these games. The coaching staff just won't put them together in logical units that can get the job done.

Lee, Stuckey never heat checks because he's never hot enough to bother.

You are right though, the players are fighting. I may not like Knight much as a player, but I do admire his general resolve.

    Nailed it.

I remember reading a really long paper on talent gap in the English Premier League (Football/Soccer). Essentially what it said was that with the exception of ethereal talent (Bale/Ronaldo/Messi/RVP/Rooney/Fabregas etc etc) most of the players were of a reasonably similar skill level and that their performance essentially boiled down to chemistry (between players and between players and staff) and management (minutes/formation/roles). Which is why occasionally you would see Man Utd lose to a stinker relegation team like Blackburn at home. The talent hadn't disappeared, but the players were being used poorly (sometimes due to injury) or there had been a chemistry breakdown.

We are seeing that right now in a painful way. We lose a key player to injury, and all of a sudden we have terrible man management occurring. In what universe does Singler play even a single second at PF? Apparantly, for Brian Hill, that is a mismatch. He is right, of course, but it isn't a particularly useful mismatch.

All these cruddy teams seeing the floor is just trashing our chemistry. When the 'coaching staff', and I use that phrase lightly, put out a team which even resembles a basketball unit, we tend to stay in the fray. Calderon with his exceptional drive and basketball IQ should give us a chance.

But no, lets put out Stuckey and Bynum because everybody knows Motown is made of bricks.

    Pathetic.

Watching these games it seems like just about every team the Pistons play has better shooters and is bigger/more athaletic. It got me wondering, what do the Pistons talent evaluators look for in players? I feel like they'd be falling over themselves trying to sign The Who's pinball wizard guy.

How much money would we have to offer Calderon to resign with this team? I can't imagine him wanting to come back to this mess.

Bynum's -10 was almost as bad as Middleton's -11. Lee, you keep mentioning Will's +/- figures when they are bad, but his average is still better than English, Calderon, and Stuckey.

Bynum was paired with Stuckey, Middleton, Villanueva, Jerebko, Calderon, and Kravtsov last night for his -11 (in 7 minutes). When he was paired with Monroe (for 12 minutes), he was breakeven. Middleton was the best of that bunch and he was getting dominated by M Williams as they seemed to be attacking the rookie.

Middleton hit some threes, but other than that, he had 1 reb, 0 ast, 0 stl, 1 blck, and 3 PF in 24 minutes. Meanwhile Marvin Williams goes off with 14 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals with no fouls in opposition off the bench. Middleton was a couple 3 point makes away from having Charlie Villanueva's box score.

All I'm saying is that we are severely undertalented and undermanned right now. Missing Knight, Drummond, Maxiell, Tay, Daye, and the coach is bound to have some sort of negative effect. While I wanted to see what Kravtsov could do, he's clearly a stiff. We just played the Jazz (who we haven't beaten in Utah since Rebraca was on the floor) without half our team. To pinpoint a guy on the team who actually suited up as being the problem seems silly to me at this point.

    Calderon/ Bynum
    Singler/ Stuckey/ English
    Jerebko/ Middleton/ Maggette
    Villanueva
    Monroe/ Kravtsov

That was what Brian Hill had to work with. Shuffle them up any way you want and it's a loser on the road against an NBA team.

While it's nice to potentially move up in the lottery odds, Calderon can't be too motivated to come back to this mess next year. Hopefully we get Drummond back to full health and we end the season on a win streak with Calderon, Monroe, and Drummond doing major damage in the starting unit. We need a silver lining going into the off season.

If the Red Wings missed the playoffs for 4 straight years, you think Ken Holland might get some criticism?
