I think the Tiger announcer said that this was Verlander's first time pitching into the 8th inning this year?? Either way he gave up 12 hits and with Al-Al delivering a HR pitch, JV gave up 5 earned runs. Inconsistency is why I questioned why Leyland selected JV to the All Star team, unless he wanted to boost his confidence?? He probably won't pitch in the game but "my goodness" as Jim Price always says..

The relief crew didn't help.....they gave up 11 hits and 6 runs in two innings.....

Fielder is another player that could have stayed home and rested.....hasn't played in every game this season??

But alas, guess he had be there to defend his HR derby championship??

Fielder and Verlander were both in the top 10 in the AL MVP voting last year. They helped lead their team to the World Series. Whether it's right or wrong, guys often get rewarded the year after.

JV definitely needs to keep working out the kinks....

The first thing that happened after JV was taken out was that the relief pitcher gave up a HR. Mabye JV should have been left in longer to get us out of the jam?

5ER, but 2 of them were the result of Al Al's gopher ball.

He has struggled somewhat this year, I think that should be grounds for a shorter leash.

JV gave up 4 straight hits at that point including a homer

From Verlander: "One of those days that happens at this level and this time of year. I felt good but wasn't able to execute there in the eighth... It's one of those things where, as a pitcher at the major league level, you're not going to have your best stuff every time out so you need to be able to compensate for that. I felt I was able to pitch pretty well up until the eighth."

Excuses, excuses. "One of those days."

Here is what he should have said: "Mr. Ilitch is paying me a lot of money to go out there and win every fifth game or at least keep the team in the game. I didn't do that. I have no excuse. At this level, not having my best stuff -- or at least close to it -- is no longer an option."

I have every belief that he'll turn it around in the second half. In the meantime, I'm sick of hearing about his mechanics and not having his "best stuff." Figure it out. Fast.

And instead of going to the All-Star Game, perhaps he should stay home and watch film.

A huge part of pitching is mental. A pitcher doesn't want to admit (to the public or himself) that he has lost his stuff. When things are not going well, he MUST believe that he is just a little mechanical tweak away from being great again. Once a pitcher loses his confidence, he is done (see Papa Grande).

Jack Nicklaus never admitted in a post round interview that he screwed up. It was always that he hit the perfect putt and got a bad roll, or that the green speed changed, etc. I think that it was purposeful and helped him with his confidence.

Here's a story that hints at his mindframe

VMart has found his groove. 12 game win streak...Tigers are 17-3 when he gets two or more hits and they great record when he knocks in at least one run. The big three came through as Miggy, Fielder and Vmart all had three hits...the first time that has happen all season. All three got singles in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-3

Porcello was decent holding the ChiSux to 3 runs. Smyly was his usuall stellar self and Benoit got his 8th save. I am still not sold on Rondon who gave up two runs in the seventh.

Rondon seems to be so unsure of himself. He is also fairly young. Another issue that I have seen happening more often lately, is that as soon as Tigers score some runs pitching comes in and gives some back right away. They need to figure that out somehow.

Tui homers for the 3rd game in a row to put Tigers on top 2-1. That guy has been something else this year.

Miggy goes yard for # 30... We needed that one after the Tigers were leaving the door open with plenty of runners LOB in the first four innings. I especially didn't like how they ended the 4th sending slow footed Vmart home from second and he was thrown out ..... 3 -1 Tigers end of 5

Yea, those LOB early in the game usually come back to haunt you.
