The only alternative is the Piston rookie coach retread route. Can any coach make a difference the way things are now?

So is 72 year old Ray Scott , only Piston coach ever to win Coach of the Year (coaching the Pistons that is as LB won with the Sixers)

Why doesn't Darrell Walker ever get a look? It seems like he's been the top assistant forever.

Chuck Daly came out of Cleveland, right? He didn't exactly have a great start to his career IIRC.

a lot of the names being dropped are smart PR on Joe D's end. it's about showing "up and comers" respect. giving them consideration validates them as somewhere between an assistant and a real coaching prospect. down the road a few years, after some of the guys make a name for themselves, they remember.

some of these guys also end up in the gm chairs, look at lance blanks.
you never know who you might be calling in the year 2014 at the trade deadline. it always pays to show respect and the long odds are that a "costs nothing" public exhibition in giving a guy consideration on joes end may pay didvidends of some sort down the road.

    it's plain smart b-ball biz..

i can't see the Pistons hiring another rookie coach at this fork in the road. they still have time to see what other apples drop from the tree. they don't need anyone in place before the summer league. i wouldn't count out lawrence franks too soon, he's like a friendlier version of scott skiles.

Well, the problem is, if you're going to go that route...at least find a successful one.

I don't usually trust people with two first names but I wouldn't hate this hire. He's no Bill Laimbeer but IS Bill Laimbeer the right guy for the job at this point? I kinda wanna take a flyer on Bill Laimbeer at this juncture but Frank seems like a "safe" hire.

...Not really stoked on the idea of Casey or Sampson.

You know who else blew away Pistons' management in the interviews? Flip Sauners, Michael Curry, and John Kuester.

I'd feel better if they said, "the candidate got into a long and heated argument with Pistons management and stormed out of the session only to be chased down by Joe Dumars and offered a contract.

Our problem has been that we've had 3 straight coaches who couldn't gain the respect of the players. This guy is going to break that string? They are going to think he's the ball boy until he benches them for the 3rd time.

This must be taken with a large grain of salt. It is hyperbole, as you well know.

Now your talking my candidate from the front end, but alas, the rear chasing is a figment of tall tales from beyond.

He doesn't have to break any common string. The real rope becomes the Hangman's Noose (How to Tie a Hangmans Noose: 7 steps (with video) - wikiHow) for it foretells the proper length of rope and who might be signing off for the proper fit. JD is no longer the final say and this will have different repercussions all the way down the chain. The decision might not be housed into the comfortable mode of yet another secondary behooving to JD's sense of player acquiesce. Frank should and maybe did, give the right introduction. What will appeal to those significant others is his logical strain of analytic thinking. This will settle well with Gores' style. He needs time to understand comfort domains that remain specious and have mis-directed comfort levels. Does anyone know those present at the interviews? This will provide a significant clue for next and future ball boy.

For his first head coaching gig he dealt with a roster that included K-Mart, Jason Kidd, Jason Richardson, and the following year he had Vince Carter. He handled that group of egos all right. I don't expect that to be a problem with Frank.

I'd much rather see him on the sidelines than JVG, Sampson, Woodson etc.

I approve of Lawrence Frank. He is a smart veteran coach whose best days may be in front of him.

If it was Casey's defense that shut down the Kobe/Gasol, Durant/Westbrook and confused the Heat, then I would support that hire as long as he adds Laims to his coaching staff as a Gores/Dumars directive.

We saw Thibideau shut down both the Pistons and Lakers in 2008 on the way to the title and then saw him take his current Bulls team to the #1 seed and into the ECF.

The Pistons missed their chance of hiring with Thibideau by waisting it on Kuester and should not let Casey get away if he has the potential to bring the D back to the D.
