Final game at Joe Louis just started. 90 minute tribute to the building and history after the game for those that get FSD or can find a stream

Scotty still looks pretty good for a man who helped found the NHL in 1899.

I am going to rename this thread so it is just a general Wings thread. We don't have enough posts to justify an annual thread each year.

He was a great leader and player.

But... there were anywhere from 5 to 8 other hall of famers on the teams that got the Cup with him. That is why we can't measure the worth of a man by Championships alone.

The Wings were like the modern NBA super teams and couldn't have been like that in a salary cap environment.

On the first Cup team, he was playing with Shanahan, Lidstrom, Federov, Fetisov, and Larionov. Then, there were many non HOFers who were spectacular, like Konstantinov (who led the league in defensive win shares that year).

That dilution is why many think of guys like Barry Sanders first. Yzerman's greatness was also spread over a very long timeframe.

Miguel Cabrera, Barry Sanders, Isiah Thomas, and Yzerman are probably the Mount Rushmore from this era though. Yzerman has the most competition due to all the ridiculous talent than the Wings kept acquiring. Lidstrom is very close, but probably a hair behind.

Yzerman was kind of the Tom Brady of the Wings. He bought in so hard (and had a mastermind coach) that everyone else could just get plugged into the machine.

The Red Wings have the most amazing alumni organization. All of the former players talk to each other. Not just guys who played together, but guys who played 30 years ago help mentor the new Wings.

Yes. 3 I believe as a player and one as an exec in Detroit (VP operations)

He has gone to the Stanley Cup Finals as an exec in Tampa but they didn't win. They lost to Chicago.
