SVG has been offered the President and Coach jobs per Yahoo sports. Love the decision as a coach, but as a GM not so sure. However, this may be the type of deal we have to give i order to acquire a veteran coach that isn't a total retread.

It says in the article that SVG would bring Otis Smith in as the GM. This is certainly interesting.

If SVG is the coach and makes all personnel decisions, what is a GM to do then?

I presume he would do more of the hands on stuff and SVG would oversee it.

Its like R.C. Buford in SA. Pop has final say on all personnel decisions, but R.C. does the day-to-day - seems like paperwork, making sure contracts, 10-days, D-league etc. are taken care of. Basically the GM during the season when most trades, signings, draft etc. are finished.

This seems like a classic Platinum Equity move. Eliminate redundancy, consolidate positions, profit. Use the savings to add another button to your polo shirts. Maybe they can make Jerry the Security Guard the Hallway Coach/Head of Security.

From a pure coaching persepective, how would SVG rank from the last Pistons coaches:

    Loyer
    Cheeks
    Lawrence
    Kuester
    Curry
    Flip
    LB
    Carlisle
    (Did I miss any?)

Has to be in the Top 3 right?

Someone needs to take over the day-to-day activities (eating popcorn, playing on your Blackberry, bidding against yourself to extend players with bloated contracts, etc.).

Each guy has 2 ears... that's 4 phones/ deals that could happen simultaneously. Think how quickly we will bid against ourselves on the next mediocre FA!

The GM will probably do the day-to-day work, while SVG has the final say in drafts, trades, extensions etc. I think this is a really good move actually. SVG is going to trade for the exact players he feels will thrive in his coaching style.

He will not be forced to put in a player like Josh Smith in the starting roation together with Monroe and Drummond, like JD clearly wanted. Unless that's a strategy that SVG feels like is the best. Which it will not be, as SVG seems to be in love with 3pt shooters at every position but the center. 4-year extension to CV next?

For real tho, SVG made Orlando a top tief defensive team with nothing but Howard pretty much. Jameer Nelson, Rashaard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu etc. C. Lee had his best season in his career when he played with SVG. SVG is very suited to turn Drummond into a defensive beast like Howard.

I was afraid of this type of hire. The NBA is full of coaches who have had mild success here or there but have not shown the framework to get a team to the elite level and stay there awhile. Wasn't impressed with him at Orlando or Miami. Yes, they won games but he couldn't get those talented teams to where they needed to be.

Stan was usually out-coached when the Pistons played against him during the run. He often looks lost when the tide turns in a game. Both Larry (of course, but also Flip) out-coached him.

What is the difference between a Cheeks and a Van Gundy? Same type of hire. Seemingly safe hire but little obvious upside. Lee is going to have a field day...

Let's use a little imagination and find the next Carlisle or Popovich. Take a chance.

Would an upcoming coach come here with such an unbalanced roster job security issues and no control over the fate. I think history tells us we can't convince these guys to come. Last year we could not get anybody of worth. We seriously need some stability and tangible success to reboot this franchise.

The Piston job is a better offer for SVG.....Who wants to be fired by the Warrior brass even after having winning seasons and making it to the playoffs in tough western conference?
The chances of getting deep into the playoffs with the Pistons in the east is a positive too.

maybe he should have hired both Van Gundy's....JVG can either be the assistant coach or take Blaha's place

I just want to know who their # 2 suggestion is if SVG decides to take the Warrior job? I mean Laimbeer was the coach and GM for the Shock....and Zeke has had both jobs ..but not with the same team or time.

I'm shocked at the reticence I'm seeing here. SVG is the best coach out there by a wide margin - dude has never had a losing season as a head coach, having coached both Miami and Orlando to at least the conference finals. He's levelheaded, rational, brilliant, and would bring instant good feelings (from at least me) after the most miserable Pistons season in Pistons memory.

Basically, you could pencil this team in for the playoffs next year if he signs. I'm stoked.

His .641 career winning percentage is below that of Flip when he was here for 3 years, still...very good.
I like the idea of a GM. This will allow him to delegate his load, but still control operations.

Pay him...let's get it done. Besides...he reminds me of some porn guy from long ago.

I'm on board with SVG. Good move if we can get him.
