I don't like when I hear fans crying about how we "lost the pick"...we didn't lose it we traded it. We already got value for it by signing Josh Smith. Is there a better player than Josh Smith @ 8? Probably not.

It sucks we gave up a lottery pick instead of a pick in the high teens, but it happens- we were on the other side of this with Memphis and the Darko fiasco...Charlotte may get burned like we did- its all a crap shoot.

I used to love spending time analyzing rosters, trying to find ways to assemble talent via trade and free agency. I don't have luxury of time so much anymore, but when I get curious and see whats available- nothing seems to be an obvious fit. I feel like every team has severe weaknesses and can be beaten. What wins in the NBA these days are a couple of great players, great coaching, balance on offense, good defense, depth and lots and lots of luck.

We already have two very very good players in Drummond and Monroe FA. There is a chance that a team like New Orleans sees Monroe as the perfect front court mate for Anthony Davis and will offer him a max contract or close. If this is the case we should try for sign and trades involving draft picks, if not MATCH IT. Chances are New Orleans will still be interested come the trade deadline, or maybe a play for Kevin Love could be possible. And yes I would trade half the team to see a Love/Drummond front court even if it lasts a year.

We should still have enough space to sign Monroe and a high price free agent. It will be difficult to resist spending that money, especially since we don't have a first round pick. Some of the bigger names that could be fits include Luol Deng (29), Kyle Lowry (3 years older than Jennings similar production), and Gordon Hayward (is he 5 times the player Singler is? Cuz he will be payed like it). Anyone of these guys would make us a playoff team and help fix some chemistry problems- but if we are building around our 21 year old superstar center only Hayward really makes any sense. If that doesn't work out- don't waste the space- sign quality guys on shorter deals like a Trevor Ariza, Lance Stephenson, Patrick Mills, Isaiah Thomas. Maybe a specialist like a Thabo Sefolosha (defense), Jimmer Fredette (shooting), Matt Bonner (locker room/shooting), Shane Battier (leadership).

Bottom line we should have made the playoffs this year with the talent on this team. We don't have enough players that know how to play basketball though unfortunately. We need to get rid of the guys who don't know how, teach those that can be taught and add some guys that know their strength/weaknesses- and make sure we are building for when Dre becomes a free agent. SVG has 2 years to figure it out.

Nice post. I think one of the beefs people have is we could have kept our pick AND signed Smith had we used our amnesty clause on Gordon. We didn't. And now its gone to waste.

It will be interesting if the Pelicans sign Joe Dumars. Imagine if he then made a play for Monroe?

With the money Gores saved, he can spend extra on fa's to make it up to us.

Great post indeed. Nice to put things in perspective.

If Dumars is hired by the Pelicans, I hope he makes a play for Stuckey.

If Dumars takes the Pelican GM position and makes a play for Monroe, then we must do a S & T....Moose and Stuckey for a #1 draft pick and two of their guards ..and we can pick between Rivers, Holiday, Evans and Gordon

Its been awhile so my memory is fuzzy, but by trading Gordon and then releasing Villenueva using the amnesty couldn't we have freed up enough to make a play for a couple max free agents?

They could have, yes. But they didn't want to pay CV not to play for them.

    LOL.
That's exactly what the Pistons ended up doing.
Charlie only played in about 12 more games that I did last year and I'm not even under contract.
