The Pistons currently sit at 21-32, cutting Josh Smith, losing Brandon Jennings for the season and allowing a 6th grade level non-NBA player to start (Kyle Singler).

Big wins over Dallas, Toronto and San Antonio on the road.

Everything is relative. So lets consider our last few coaches. Maurice Cheeks. John Loyer. Lawrence Frank.

Were you inspired by any of these guys?

A freaking + for the big SVG. He is doing his very best to build a team with identity, a useful combination of players. He has turned Monroe into Mr Consistency. I don't see the sooking and the slow walks from every second guy after they miss a lay up. He is making this group of players a team. Awesome.

B+ is an inside joke on PF.com. Back in the day someone was lambasted for giving Michael Curry a B+ during the year of the Chauncey/AI trade. Expectations were super-high back then...

    @CloudWalker@CloudWalker - where u at dude?

Aside from the vaunted history of the B+, I think the grade is pretty accurate in this case. I might even drop it down to a flat B.
The roster is a disaster and Gundy is getting a lot out of these guys.

I still question several of his GM moves:
    - Meeks is decent but not really worth his paycheck.
    - Robert Covington was right under our noses and should be starting for the Pistons.
    - Stan's done nothing to address the SF situation.
    - We still have an unresolved situation with Greg Monroe for next season.

I think his coaching has been on-point. I'm still not sure what the Pistons' "identity" is but it seems like we are moving towards having one.
For the first time in a long time - players seem accountable for their play. When guys make mistakes, they get coached. When guys do something well, they get praised.

I can't honestly find anything to criticize Stan about. They're 21-33 right now, which is below what I expected, but 16-10 since Christmas even with their two highest-paid players not playing right now. Looking at their record purely from a W-L perspective, they're underperforming. But they have three guys on the roster (Drummond, Monroe, Jennings) that I can actually see being the centerpiece of a championship-caliber team.

Their offense is light-years better than last year while their defense is really up and down. They're young, though, so that's to be expected. They upgraded their PF position in the middle of the season by turning Smith into Tolliver for both this year and next. They will have the cap space to sign Monroe, Singler, a mid-1st draft pick, and another upper-tier free agent next season. It's been the better part of a decade since I've felt as optimistic about the team's future, and the primary reason for that is the work that Stan has done. There's also the whole wall thing.

Plus, how long has it been since any Detroit team has had as a coach that has been able to offer as much interesting and honest insight. Dude's charismatic as all get out and I'm glad he's the coach. I'd give an A-, but that's not an option.

It is difficult to put someone in the "A" category when their team has lost 60% of their games. But if you look at what was placed on his plate and the direction the team appears to be heading ( north for the first time in a decade) I have to give him the highest grade possible outside of the "A" range. "B+" for me.

Arguably, as far as the Pistons (exclusively) are concerned. Chuck Daly ( 2 ships) , Larry Brown (1 ship) , then who? Flipper? SVG?

Chuck built his team from scratch and had a great GM

Larry had some talent but made a couple good moves

Flipper had talent fall into his lap and had a shot at a couple of ships ( deserves more credit than people give him, IMO.

Stanley had very little but brings hope and improvement. . He hasnt accomplished anything yet from a results standpoint.

A few old fogies like myself, may remember Rat Scott who did have some talent and took his team to the playoffs (a big deal back then) , IMO. He definitely wore the coolest medallion.

Not much else in the last half century. I think it says a lot for SVG that people like and respect him! I hope his efforts reap rewards in the standings soon.
