5 game summer league stats (I left out Delaney and Richard due to low sample sizes): eFG% (TS% and points per shot attempt are also in the same order): Daye- .569 Macklin- .526 English- .522 Singler- .500 Drummond- .500 Middleton- .452 Gates- .382 Knight- .347 (turble) Ware- .267 +/- per 36: Macklin +6.54 English +6.01 Daye +3.85 Knight +2.49 Ware -1.62 Drummond -2.67 Singler -3.31 (kind of strange that they said he was impossible to take out of the game b/c he was doing everything right) Middleton -3.41 Gates -3.78 Rebounds per 36: Macklin- 14.1 (this guy sort of rebounds hard) Daye- 10.2 (good sign) Gates- 9.5 Drummond- 8.0 (under performing a bit) English- 4.6 Middleton- 4.3 Ware- 3.8 Knight- 3.7 Singler- 2.9 (yikes, not good) Assists/turnovers per 36: Knight- 9.0/5.0 (too many turns, but good assist rate) Ware- 7.6/3.2 (better ratio) Daye- 1.9/3.6 English- 1.9/3.1 Gates- 0.9/3.3 Middleton- 0.9/1.6 Drummond- 0.6/0.9 (nice low turnovers... good hands?) Singler- 0.4/2.6 (he should be passing better) Macklin- 0.0/1.0 (he's not passing in Summer League without a contract) Blocks per 36: Drummond- 3.0 (good) Daye- 2.7 (surprisingly high) Macklin- 1.0 Gates- 0.5 Singler- 0.4 Knight- 0.3 Rest- 0.0 Free throw makes per 36: Knight- 7.5 Daye- 5.8 Singler- 2.9 Ware- 2.7 English- 2.2 Macklin- 1.0 Gates- 0.9 Drummond- 0.9 (not helped by his 25% conversion rate) Middleton- 0.6 Knight: shot poorly, had a lot of assists with a lot of turnovers too. Should have dominated this but didn't. Ware: .267 shooting is sort of a non starter when you're trying out. Passed well and protected ball OK. I heard Bynum-lite comparisons and can't dispute. Daye: shot was back on form. Rebounded well and blocked shots at a high rate. Got to the line more than the other SF's. Turnovers were a bit high. Singler: Shot decently, but didn't do much else that showed up in the stats. Rebounding and passing were both anemic. Heard strong comments from coaches... English- Shot well, passed well, and rebounded averagely. For a defensive guy with a good shooting rep, this is a solid showing. Middleton: didn't really do anything that stood out as being better than others (or needed on the real roster). He has potential to be a Durant type, right? Gates: poor shooting percentage. Worst +/-. Good rebounding (especially offensive), OK passing, and sort of weak on the block front. Rep was that he was heavy and lacked conditioning. Can't comment on that. Drummond: OK efficiency on offense (except horrific FT shooting). OK rebounding, but got out boarded by Daye, which is sad. Great shot blocking. Good hands. Macklin: Continued the pattern that he showed last season. Efficient on offense. Highest rebound rate on team. Highest +/-. Slightly below average shot blocker. OK hands. Based on the limited action that I saw on NBA TV and the stats, I'd say: Ware- out Middleton- in limbo. If on the team for good, will likely be sent to D-League. Won't get any PT. Gates- surely out due to our recent glut of big men. He just didn't do enough. Macklin- maybe in. I'm wondering if he isn't Faried-lite-lite.
Good stuff, thanks. I also wonder why Macklin doesn't get more love. I sure wish they would have kept him instead of that European import that I know nothing about but will judge negatively anyway.
I can't understand why you would not sign Macklin. A good rebounder, solid defender and efficient on offense. No one expects him to be Kevin Love/TyChandler. He will sign a minimum contract and contribute more than than Vanillawafer on everything.
CV will turn into a $8 mill expiring with a good skill set (thats completely wasted here) and Macklin will still be a 12th man. That's sad because I'm essentially saying that CV is less productive than the 4th string big man.
I watch summer league more consistently than the regular season. Part of that was SL games were available online without a cable sub before LP had exclusive broadband. This was THE best summer league season we've ever had. I think it boils down to good guard play and some real nice talent on the wings. Singler didn't do much passing and watching the games, I'm not bothered at all. The guy was rarely in a position that passing made more sense than shooting. He either cut to the open part of the floor, took 1 dribble to get open or was the recipient of a kick pass. Rebounding on the other hand... Drummond didn't turn the ball over that much because he didn't do much. He has a mercurial jump shot seeing that he can hit a sweet step back in rhythm but miss all construction while shooting a free throw. He doesn't body his man or back him down so he makes an easy pass back out or goes up for a weak shot attempt. He did a good job neutralizing the opposing C and with both him and Monroe, they should be ok most nights. I liked the Orlando league better than Vegas. Seems like guys played harder. Guard defense is a lot tighter and the pace was way faster. Maybe its the concentration of NBA movers and shakers over casual fans.
That's one of the big things I took away from his game last season. He would back up a bad game with at least a decent showing the next and a couple of times where he had a bad game against a certain team/other rookie, like Cleveland, he made a point of playing a good game to make up for it. The guy is a true competitor.
Daye has looked good in summer-league before. I kinda like the potential for him as a stretch four. Obviously you have to worry about defensive rebounding, but he should be a tough match-up for back-up fours. by Vince Ellis 11:53 AM Reply Permalink How could Austin Daye look so good in Summer League after looking so bad last season? by BobLanier 11:52 AM
That is not me. Ol' Vince doesn't seem like he's going to be working too hard to get to the bottom of this.
Sac just added Brooks so that probably means Jimmer is out and they are lacking a stretch 4. Jimmer for Daye?
ANYTHING for Daye... ANYTHING.. I woke up this morning and read about James Johnson going to Sacramento for a 2nd round pick and I thought that if Joe Dumars pulls a trade like that getting rid of Daye and CV in the same move he would be crowned like the best GM ever. ---------------- After watching a couple of games, I want Yancy Gates instead of Macklin!
