Yea, but Eddie Murray is 16th all time and was 7th when He retired.....
......most fans do not appreciate the kicker.
For the Lions...it's their best position since before Errol Mann...in the 60s.......

Hanson was awesome. I still didn't put him in my Top 4 All-Time Lions, though.

    Barry Sanders
    Herman Moore
    Calvin Johnson
    Robert Porcher

Honorable mention to Jason Hansen. It was a hard call between him and Porcher. Both career Lions and outstanding players at their position.

Remember when Mitchell dressed up like Wayne Fontes for Halloween?

He had the size and strength of a HOF QB.
...he had the mental makeup of a simple minded buffoon!
(I'm under the assumption that their wasn't a Wonderlic test back then.)

I could's stand to look at him with that blank stare that the had!

It bothered Lomas Brown so bad that he gave defenders free-shots as his own QB.
It bothered Barry Sanders so much that he retired prematurely (I strongly believe that the team's reluctance to improve upon the likes of Fontes & Mitchell contributed to Barry's early exit from the game).

    You're right
Fontes was a "players coach" and yeah, I think Barry liked the guy.

Bobby Ross probably had more to do with Barry retiring than the "Big Buck" did. I DO know that Barry was frustrated with the organizations inability to put a "winning organization" in place. I think the Ford's are more to blame more than anyone else. It's pretty clear that Bobby Ross was a "from bad to worse" situation compared to Fon-tez.

I don't care that Barry and the team liked him. ...Fontes was a complete idiot and an absolute underachiever.
The fact that HE is the most "successful" modern day coach of the Detroit Lions is hillarious.

...He deferred an overtime coin toss and "took the wind" in an indoor stadium for cyin' out loud!

    You sure that wasn't Morningdue.
Ross left cause the Fords messed with his style. Boss Ross knew what he was doing.

I think Barry got his most yards under BRoss. The one year with a full time fullback. Barry thought fullbacks just got in the way. But it worked.

Several of Barry's favorite players were dealt away or not resigned.
Some of those were key O-linemen.
Barry's friends were more important than Barry's records.

I don't remember anything being so incredibly special about team that went 12-4 under Fontes but that literally was the most wins they got in my long lifetime. It seemed Utley got hurt and it united them. If not for that fabulous Redskins team that kicked their butts earlier that year I do believe they would have won the Super Bowl.

    Unity. Maybe that was it?

I never liked Fontes or Mitchell.

Mitchell did rack up a lot of yards, but had Moore, Perriman, Morton, and Barry Sanders for crying out loud. Just think what Manning would have done with those options.

Going into the last three games, the Lions had 8 of their starters on injured reserve...yet they were still winning.
The spare parts even came to play. Our best player was Eric Andolsek...a blocker who was a hoss of a man.

For all the "success" that the Lions had those three years or so, the won in SPITE of Wayne Fontes, not BECAUSE of him.

While Fontes was a joke, and a bad X and O's head coach... he has to be given credit for getting the TEAM to play as a unit that cared for each other and at this point is the best coach the Lions have had in my life time... (sad as that is to say).
