Mutually beneficial move. Rasho isn't that bad - hell, he's probably the best center in Raptors history already. His contract was ridiculous for the non-role he was playing for the Spurs, but reasonable for a starting center who'll probably put up 10&8 along with a couple of blocks and good post defense. San Antonio gets the long-term salary dump and a player in Eric Williams who still might be able to play defense, along with a scrub in Bonner who can hit the occasional 3.

If I'm Colangelo, then I take that deal in a heartbeat. In fact, if Buford laid that deal's signed and completed paperwork on the table, I would point over Buford's shoulder to distract him, slug him in the jaw, snatch up the paperwork, and run like hell.

Rasho, Bosh, Charlie V., give them a nice trio of bigs. The deal brings Toronto a solid starting 5 who compliments Bosh's low post game. It has no negative impact on their cap flexibility in '07. That deal's a no brainer.

If I have Bosh, Charlie V, and Rasho, then I would seriously consider Rudy Gay with that #1 pick.

Yeah, that's an easy deal for Toronto... Eric William is getting old... Bonner is trade fodder.
Rasho is servicable... can give you some offense and give some back on defense... but they need an experienced big.
Kinda makes you wonder if the Spurs are getting ready to move a another SG/SF... I know Pop didn't like Rasho.

Couldn't agree more, Merc. They do need another experienced big (Kato anyone?), and Rasho isn't much more than servicable, but when you have team like Toronto, you just need to get competitive in a hurry, as long as you don't kill yourself in the long run. As for Pop not liking Rasho, well, he didn't. My guess would be that he didn't like Rasho for the same reason that Carlisle didn't like Rebraca- both defensive systems rely upon good lateral movement from their bigs because they rely on traps to the baseline. Both of the aforementioned bigs were raised in zone systems that didn't challenge their lead-footed tendencies. Bad fit. Rasho was best used in Flip's zone (can you imagine a 29 year old, healthy Rebraca anchoring that old Minneapolis zone? Talk about blocked shots.), and hasn't been well utilized since then. I'm not saying that Rasho is a stud, but he's going to a team that had nobody in the middle. This is a team that was relying on Loren %%%%ing Woods for christsakes, and that's just sad.

I'm also feeling you on SA's swingman need. You knew they were hungry when they went after J.R. Smith (uber-talented screwup). My guess is that they offer up their full MLE for Wells, who should get the Finley treatment from just about every contender.

Talking of Toronto, they just hired Maurizio Gherardini of the Benetton club in Italy as their new assistant GM. For a long time he's been a candidate to be the first European to run an NBA team.

He's also Andrea Bargnani's boss in Italy, if that tells you anything about the Raptors' draft intentions. Don't know that I'd favor a package deal like that, since it could lead to claims of favoritism and poison the well for Gherardini if Bargnani flops.

Caught that on TrueHoop I did! You've got me hooked on that site now.

Gherardini is the fella who discovered Bargnani, but now that he's got the NBA gig, he's also considered the best (European) connected exec in the league. Between Colangelo and Gherardini the Raptors have made massive improvements to their front office.

Speaking of Colangelo, loads of rumours have him aggressively shopping the #1 or selecting someone other than Bargnani. He's running a magic show in Toronto, we're waiting to see what he pulls out of the hat.

I'm hearing rumors about Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion. Damn, what I'd give to have Marion in Pistons uniform.

Anyway, I don't know who we'd give up but we'd be getting a guy with Pistons DNA, a workhorse and stuff to prove.

If what is coming out of Charlotte is true (Aldridge & Thomas canceled workouts with Bobcats due to comitments at positions #1 & #2) makes you wonder if there's a prearranged trade trade for Toronto to move down to #4 and still end up with Bargani.

Sheed shoots 2.45 3-pointers per game at 34%. Marion shoots 3.84/ game at 35%. If we get Marion, we may as well trade Sheed+ for him, because the 2 of them would get in eachother's way out there.

LB may get a new coaching job next season. Charlotte with Jordan is being mentioned.

Rumour: Shawn Marion to Chicago for Tyson Chandler and the Bull's pick from NY.

Rumour: Kenyon Martin and Andre Miller are on the trade block in Denver. Possible trades with Knicks/Wolves and Celtics respectively.

Heat could be hemorraging benchers. Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton and Shandon Anderson are free agents. Derek Anderson may opt out of his player option for next season ($2.5 million) if he doesn't get a bigger role on the team. My take is that Riley will look to retain pieces so he can trade them as his offseason plan is apparently to be very aggressive with roster maintenance.

Cleveland has Eric Snow and Drew Gooden on the block.

The Suns may trade two first rounders to Philly to move up in the draft but the Sixers claim to be holding out for Leandro Barbosa.

Portland is also looking to move up by trading both of their late first round picks. Frankly many teams don't want to commit guaranteed salaries to late first rounders in a draft this weak.

Alonzo Mourning appears to be worth a lot more than the minimum that Miami is paying him. I bet that he leaves Miami and signs a 2-3 year contract at $5M/year now that he has his ring.

This season Sheed shot 5.4 threes a game versus 3.6 for Marion (You might be looking at career nums?).

But, I'm struggling with why Phoenix would look at moving Marion - DPOY candidate, probably in the top ten for MVP. At 6'7" he's out of position at the 4, but sure looks like a nice three. Especially at 12 boards a game.

Question is would Marion play as well on a team that doesn't run all the time? He gets a lot of stuff on the break. I bet you would see similar numbers from Prince if he were out there and probably see Marion with Prince's numbers if he were here. If you go after Marion the trade would have to be for Tay. I'm not as sure I'd pull the trigger on that one.

I agree. He seems like a keeper to me. I think that they have him signed up for a pretty long term contract too. They should not make any changes and see how they do with Amare and K. Thomas back in action.

I caught Gherardini's introduction to the Toronto press media scrum. The first thing that hits you about him is his confidence and ease. He didn't say the right things, he said what he thought without making it sound bitter.

    * Has known the Colangelo's for a long time.
    * Believes that a lot of European clubs are scared that he is in North America as their talent may be robbed.
    * Bargnani in his estimation is a Gasol/Nowitzki cross. Very good footwork, sound shooter and a terrific shot blocker.
    * Mentioned repeatedly that he wasn't supposed to talk about Bargnani, even though the media pushed a lot of questions about The Magician towards him. It's almost accepted that Toronto will not take Bargnani at the #1 in draft rumour circles. Just another sign of his savvy when manipulating the press.
    * Will be based primarily out of Toronto, not Europe.
    * Feels that the European style of play and NBA are moving closer together, but there is still a gap and the future of the NBA does not depend exclusively on an influx of European players.

All in all, I was totally impressed by this guy. Combined with Colangelo, this has been the most impressive front office moves in recent history. That's important because if I want to watch any FoxSportsNet Pistons games, they have to come on Raptors TV and that is of course contingent on their being a Toronto Raptors franchise.

Peja Stojakovic opts out of his contract to become a free agent. Imagine this guy's offense coming off the bench in Detroit? He earned $7.5 million last season. Too bad we can't afford him. Probably put us in lux tax territory. Can't have that even though Davidson has more money than God.

Agreed, but we do need more offense off the bench.

    Claxton and Harrington..................:eyebrows:

Claxton = quickness, penetrator and finisher at the hoop.

Harrington = paint scorer, go-to-guy, instant offense..

    Would that be enough?
