Didn't Checkers help Gores the last time.
Looks like Dumars dodges another HC bullet.

Is Tex Winters still alive? This could be his big break.

"Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head coach and we feel that Phil Jackson is a great resource to use," Pistons President Joe Dumars said. "I look forward to talking with Phil next week."

    He does sound happy...lol

The big question is, what does Phil think of Laimbeer?

This does not look good for Joe that neither he or inside team cannot hire a coach without bringing in an outside consultant. That means for second time in 2 years, Gores doesn't trust Joe's judgement.

Looks like Nate is not on board 100% if they are looking at Phil for advice next week. I know Phil is looking for a GM job, but don't he would want to hang out in Motown in the winter...but if the price is right, maybe he can eventually take over one of the jobs and bring some potential FA's to town.

Do most teams hire a legend who is interested in taking over the GM position to consult on a bi-annual hiring decision?

Are they going to get a consultant to assist with the contract negotiations also?

Hard to imagine that Joe will be around much longer. I loved the Going To Work Pistons that he put together, but haven't really liked the team much after that. I dig Drummond and Monroe, but I imagine they will be around for a while.

Phil Jackson wouldn't attach his name to anything unless there is a brass ring at the end of it. He is going to be more than a consultant. Stick a fork in Joe, he is done. This is a machiavellian power play at the highest order. Phil will now be pulling the strings behind the scenes. Ala Pat Riley with the Heat.

It's definitely possible, but it's not a given. I think Gores and Jackson have known each other for a little while, so this smells more like a favor and there's always money attached. However, it DOES smell like Dumars has been given all the rope he's going to get. Having a consultant brought in means your decisions are no longer trusted. It doesn't always translate to firing, but it will highlight your need to change how you make decisions. If Joe doesn't figure that out, he's gone.

Yep. Gores had to see this long list of 1-2 year fired coaches, so conclusion was not so hard...He definitely does not want to pay remaining salaries of fired coaches....

I don't see any Machiavellian, back door deals here.
I think that this is a product of two things:
    1. Attaching one of the most successful names in basketball history to your team in any capacity is good for fan perception. I doubt that they're asking PhilJax to do much of anything aside from giving his opinion (if he even has one.) He probably won't even be asked to travel to Detroit at any point of this process
    2. Another set of eyes & ears on this decision is a good thing. The Pistons absolutely HAVE to get this decision right. There's no way that they can afford the embarrassment of having to sack another coach. They are already the laughing stock of the NBA for the fact that the Pistons' HC position is basically the same as being the drummer for Spinal Tap.

I believe Detroits best option is to go for someone with less than 3 years of experience as an assistant coach.
