Pardon my naiveness, but there are a lot of salary/cap/exemption/FA issues that I don't understand (not that I really what to know ALL of it).

Does Ben's free agency and looming bill (if/when JD retains his services after this season) not affect the cap?

A very brief explanation would be appreciated.

Yes. Ben will be an unrestricted FA. That means that the Pistons do not have an automatic right to match the best offer (that would be restricted FA).

Ben will be on the open market, anyone can bid for him up to the space they have under the cap. None of the cap exceptions would apply because Ben is going to get a LOT more than the largest possible exception a different team could use on him.

Detroit can go ABOVE the cap to sign Ben. They can do it WITHOUT using any of their one-time per annum exceptions. The reason is that the CBA provides for teams to re-sign their own free agents. That is called Bird Rights after Larry Bird. Any player who has not been waived or not changed teams as a free agent in 3 years is eligible for Bird Rights.

Teams can offer 5 year deals to Ben. With Detroit holding his Bird Rights, they can offer 6.

I believe that Detroit can give Ben a Maximum Deal with 12.5% raises each year. That would start at around 13+ million.

The issue is not if Detroit can go over the cap for Ben. The issue becomes, will they. If Atlanta or Chicago goes after him with a large 5 year deal, will Detroit match or exceed that deal. Or is Ben committed to Detroit and it won't come to that...

Sorry, I tried to be brief, but I also wanted to be comprehensive.

Another 20 Plus Night By Smush Last Night vs

    Atlanta?

Well maybe that is like Darko's big game last year against Atlanta. Does it really count?

Okur Goes For 29 and 12 vs Raptors?

This was after he had zip in his previous game against the Nets.

But you have got to love Sloan's comment about Memo getting the open shot this year.

    Quoting Sloan:

"He had a terrrible outing in New Jersey," Sloan said. "But when he has open shots he can make them. This year, he can get open. Last year, he couldn't get open because he wasn't in good enough shape." LOL

    Mike James career high

Mike James drops 38 on the 76ers, with 9 assists, but Raptors still lose. 0-8? Ouch!

Lurker, he let A.I. throw him 5 feet toward the hoop with his drive and stop action. Dagger. And he was 42% from 3. Not quite good enough.

CBA has been renewed before the season, so, raises is 10.5% a year, I have said in the other post, Pistons is tough about the max contract because of Luxury tax. Next Luxury cap would be 65M. The Pistons salary will be about 56 M, maybe more. if we want to offer him max salary, it will be 14 or 15M etc, Joe won't do that, or he will waive D davis, but we will have some problem to re-sign darko and Chauncey next season (of course it depends on how much we will give Chauncey if he gets double(triple???) MVP this season). I think no team wil give Ben more than 4 years max salary contract, after this season, he will turn to 32, 5 year, it means the last year of his contract will be huge....

Mateen Cleaves 5 assists, 11 points last night for the Sonics in 21 minutes of action.

How is this for disrespect? He's not even on the NBA.com players list.

In 10 games off the bench this year, he's averaging a career high 5.6 PPG.

Mike James got his wish. He is starting and playing heavy minutes. He is averaging 16.6 points and 3.7 assists per game. He is getting a nice paycheck. What more could he ask for? Well, the Raptors are 1-14...
