The NBA's biggest story of the year to date..... New Orleans Hornets announce name change to Pelicans - ESPN
Personally, I love it. Regional, kinda throwback, with great mascot potential. No one really likes hornets anyway.
I hope their logo is a cartoon pelican with his fists up and a little sailor hat cocked forward. Like the Fighting Irish, but with a bird instead of a leprechaun.
Utah needs to give their name back to Nawlens. Salt Lake City doesn't make me think of Charlie Parker. IMO, the "Utah Jazz" makes the least amount of sense out of any team name in pro sports. ...I don't think of 'lakes' when I think of L.A. either. ...Maybe it should be the Utah Lakers and Los Angeles should change their name.
Just Pelicans doesn't sound very intimidating. It should've been something like Berserk Pelicans or Vampire Pelicans.
Utah Mailers - in honor of Karl Malone. Utah Seagulls - Apparently the "gull" is the state bird of Utah. How bizarre is it that the seagull is the state bird of a state that doesn't have any coastline. Utah Dinosaurs - after the Dinosaur National Monument, although the NBA might frown upon two prehistoric names Utah Sloaners Utah Golden Spikes
Utah has seagulls because they spread out all the way to Colorado and migrate back over to California in the winter. Seagulls are the Utah statebird because historical accounts credit seagulls from saving early settlers' crops from an infestation of crickets.
