What would Cheeks have to do to get fired mid season? That is an interesting question.
Although most of us would like this to happen....it won't because its still to early. If we were 2 and 33, then it would be a different scenario. If this 6 game win streak gets to 15 and he and Joe are still here, then it's an official tank in progress. But as I read earlier we don't have first round pick, so tanking is not in the cards. (Someone please clarify-confirm)... So missing the playoffs in a perceived weaken eastern year would be a failure in Gore's eye, so someone would have to go then...but right now we are stuck with them.
The pick is top 8 protected, so we would need to fall pretty far. But the way we are playing it is not that far fetched. I agree that Joe won't fire just yet, but what if this is not all up to him. Next 3 games are Philly, Phoenix and Utah and right now I can't even see us winning any of those. If they are all L's and I was Gores, I wouldn't be waiting for the end of the season. Mo would be gone and see whether another coach can sort the Hydra out. If not, the mess falls on Joe - cut a hole in the bottom of his popcorn box and get another GM in in time for them to work their own offseason.
I would think that in order to fire Cheeks mid-season, Joe would have to go with him.
The Pistons are currently 1 game back of the #8 worst record right now. That would not be falling very far.
It's tough to make up ground on those bloody tankers.
Charlie G catching fire at the end of the year to knock the Pistons out of the 8th spot in the final year of his contract would be the perfect ending!
Wow, didn't check that. I should refrase - we HAVE fallen very far
The 9th spot in the east is way lower in the draft than the 9th in the west... with some luck, we can have a draft pick...
I think it has to be top 8 overall, SJ.
Yes, I knew that. But I was saying that, ath that rythm, we could be the 6th or 7th worse team. Besides that, we may need some luck to not have the other teams with less odds than us take advantage in the lottery like the past years.
I know we've discussed the fact that he won't be going mid-season, but Cheeks really needs to fired. Is there any chance he could get them to play with any sort of identity on either end of the floor? We are on track to miss the playoffs AND lose our 1st round pick. I have watched nearly every game over these past losing 6 seasons and after all the promise of talent adding over the summer, I do not feel like watching anymore. This has been the most disappointing season of them all.
I mean, how in the hell do you get away with giving responses like this as a head coach: "It was unexplainable to me," said head coach Maurice Cheeks, the man responsible for explanations. That was from the Utah game, but it is about the third time he has said something similar.
Every time this comes up in unread posts my heart skips a beat and I think, finally this idiot is gone. But no. He is still here stinking up our record and letting the worst 3pt shooter in the league do his best imitation of a nearby residential developer. He actually thinks he is the splash brothers rolled into a single power forward.
The weird thing is that i dont know any pistons fan who supports Cheeks right now... how can management still be behind this guy??
Was there anyone but the Pistons management who wanted him signed in the first place?
If we could combine frank's technical ability and passion with cheeks's ability to put players at ease and command their respect, we'd have a pretty good coach. Rebuilding teams don't need players coaches. An unorthodox mix like ours probably requires a great coach more than other situations. I'd follow the trend and go for a money ball gm though.
Just read an article grading the players and the coaches, with the latter receiving a D. This stat stood out to me: "The Pistons took leads into the fourth quarter in 21 of 41 first-half games, yet finished the first half 17-24" Detroit Pistons midseason grades: Middling marks for a team of which more was expected | MLive.com
Someone should introduce David Mayo to Lee.
I thought that when I read it too. I am guilty of bagging Singler as well and also forgetting he is just a second year player.
