I remember pictures of him next to Spudd Webb. Didn't he once kill a lion with a spear?? Manute Bol, NBA player-humanitarian, dies at 47 - NBA - Yahoo! Sports
I went to games in DC when Bol was drafted. And at some point did have a Muggsy Bogues / Manute Bol poster. Life-size. Assuming I haven't conflated several memories, his first real game was after Ruland went down with an injury. I remember it as the Bullets playing Golden State. Nobody had seen this guy before and he had nearly double figure blocks in the first half, couple of dunks, and a couple of boards. Nellie started intentionally fouling him in the second half and it worked for a while, but the kid got his act together and started hitting the free throws. That was an amazing act of courage, and the glares he gave Nellie didn't hurt. Ultimately though, his only real skill was being tall, while some condition of the bones in his hand made it hard for him to grip the ball. Nellie never forgot that game though and grabbed Manute as soon as he could get his hands on him.
Once you've seen the poster hanging from your office wall for a year or so, it's kind of a hard image to forget. In fact, sometimes in the middle of the night...
manute bol never gave me any warm and fuzzies. he was a strange player with limited skills with an interseting background. hopefully someone will pick up where he's leaving off in terms of charity. 47 is surely too young to be checking out no matter who you are and what you do for a living.
- We must rejoice in the life that was Manute Bol. I think he beat-up the Refrigerator Perry. Tales have it he was the largest man in the NBA. http://www.vuvuzela-time.co.uk/www....10822-soccer-other-football-2.html#post246258 Rejoice Vuvuzela style !
I was to one of his basketball camps here in Canada couple of years ago or so something like that and it was a great learning experience to be a part of. And was really good to be with a player who played in the NBA, I was really fortunate to be there with him. Thanks for the memories Bol....
RIP Manute.....thanks for the humanitarian work in your home country.....if only some of the younger players with more money could do something like this instead of wasting it on their entourages and gambling.... Only player in NBA history who played a significant number of years or games to average more blocks per game than points....
