Also, if you want to pack the paint and leave Billups, Pope, Singler, Knight and to a lesser degree Bynum open on the perimeter, I say bring it on.

Knight can shoot the 3 and play D. With the pack the paint offense that we're going to be running, you'd think that the interior passing from Smith and Monroe will take some of the burden off of Knight and he can turn into more of a shooter guard on a lot of possessions.

    Precisely...
And I agree with Roscoe's point...Transition baskets are going to be key. Good defense lead to turnovers and long shots, leading to fast break opportunites. I think once we get in a good game flow, Brandon Knight will be more apt to hit those open shots. There have been very few times of the course of the last couple years that the Pistons have managed to have any rhythm or flow on offense. This is going to be a completely different game Brandon Knight will be managing...with a guard friendly coach.

    Look out.

I agree with you to some degree, however, I'm not sure there's many teams outside of the Showtime Lakers that were able to ride that wave to title contention. I DO think we can be effective with a strong defense. I just feel like it would be a very pronounced weakness and would be largely exploited in the post season.

This is a transition season. If we have a great defense and a mediocre offense, that's really OK. We can always trade Monroe if we have to. We can upgrade our PG situation if Knight can't deliver.

I'd rather set the tone like this and build a base that we can tack onto than go with something more competitive that won't ever get us a ship.

Foundation: Smith/Monroe/Drummond (safe to say that all 3 of these guys could be heavy contributors on a Championship team).

Potential members of a Championship team: Knight (with improvement)

Solid bench/ role players: Bynum, Singler

Unknowns: Pope, Mitchell, Datome, Middleton (we don't know what their upsides are yet)

Unlikely to be part of a Championship team with us: Stuckey, Villanueva, Jerebko

Other: Kravtsov, Siva (deep reserves that probably wouldn't play any meaningful minutes in the playoffs)

The best case scenario this year is that we get into the playoffs and everybody on the team feels like we're building on something that they want to be a part of going forward. Next year's FA class is outstanding. By then, we will have an identity and a clear understanding of who fits in and who doesn't. Also, hopefully Lebron switches back to Cleveland by the time we're peaking and he doesn't have a team with cohesiveness right away.

You don't have to. However, wouldn't any better defensive team in the playoffs get the game into a half-court affair where this problem may be exposed?

This presumes teams can force things one way or the other at will.

We're not a championship team this year, it's a non-issue, just like we don't worry about what a 5 year old hockey player's performance is going to be like in the Stanley Cup.

Neither would I. I wonder who would be interested in taking on that contract.

Stats say that Lin is a better player than Knight, but I really think that Knight is a better fit for this team.
