Signing the QO is a lose-lose IMO. The risks to Monroe have already been noted.

For us, it will be difficult to trade him unless he gives the next team assurances he will re-sign with them. Or they need to be willing to take the risk of a one-year rental - maybe they would do that if it meant unloading a bad contract - which is obviously not what we want.

Our rebuilding process gets delayed another year while we go through this limbo.

The only quick fix now is by trading Smith, which I don't particularly want to do.

Why don't you want to trade Smith?

Ok. I simply prefer to pair him with Drummond. I like his skill set better than Monroe, he is a top 30 player in this league when engaged and I'm a believer that SVG can get him playing up to this and his strengths. I feel like Monroe has reached his ceiling.

I am also in agreeance with the commonly documented knocks on his game. His poor defense is lacking in multiple areas which I don't believe can be fixed with better coaching - too slow to guard the perimeter (stretch 4's), has difficulty guarding P'n'R, cannot defend the rim... He is a plus defender with his hands - getting steals and knockaways, but this does not offset the other negatives. On offense he is an Al Jefferson lite - he needs high usage - the ball in his hands - to be effective. His jump shot has not made any strides - even range to just 15 feet would make a difference, but this has not happened. He has now had a few years to work on this...

If Moose plays this season out on the QO then Smith's contract would only have 2 more years left on it at that point, giving us more flexibility going forward.

This is terrible news. The worst outcome for all parties involved.

Surely he wouldn't sign the qualifying offer until the 11 hour and at least give more time for sign and trades.

Perhaps Monroe and his agent are still posturing by threatening to sign the qualifying offer.

The offer isn't signed yet. Reeks of desperation.

Article said he was not open to other offers over concern the Pistons would match .That pretty much sums it up. Should have traded him last season when they could.

I didn't realize that the QO wasn't signed yet. While this could certainly be posturing, it doesn't bode well for the team. If he indeed signs the QO, he'll end up becoming a lockerroom problem I fear.

I wonder if this is part of sending a message to existing players. Dumars regime had a tendency to overvalue and take care of their existing players. By letting this RFA drag on like this, and letting Stuckey walk with no fanfare, the message to the players is that sizable paychecks to existing players are no longer a given thing.

Moose is either lying about his knowledge, his Agent is running a full-on subterfuge to increase interest / leverage, or the Pistons are running a full-on anti-moose campaign. Looks bad for all involved.

This summer long turmoil can turn into a season of discontent for the Moose man....and a struggle for the rest of the team.

I hope Moose does not influence Drummon to want to leave the team as well. Whole season of whispering how much it sucks on the team.

Well, we have him for exactly 1 year at a bargain price. Since one of the three has to come off of the bench to make this thing work, it may as well be him. After he leaves, Dre and Smith will be the starters, so may as well get used to the system now. Monroe will be motivated to put up numbers and remain content for his future market value, no matter how mad it really makes him.
