    Let's see...

Wasn't allowed to hire a new "permanent" coach - strike one
Wasn't allowed to make any trades - strike two
Team circling the bowl - strike three

The day after the season ends we can remove the placeholder status of this thread.

I'm not defending Joe, but Simmons is the king of revisionist history. Michael Carter-Williams went 11th in the draft. Now everybody knew he was going to be a star.

I don't think Simmons has ever said that he knew MCW was going to be a star, he just talks about redrafting based on current information.

He's killing GMs for not picking him. That's hindsight.

I agree CJ. He states some of this stuff like it was Melo v Darko.

Other than that he insulted Dumars throughout the article yet he never took a cheap shot at him. He was 100% spot on.

What's really funny about Simmons is how offended he gets if you criticize any of his predictions in hindsight.

I like Simmons because he gets what it is to be a fan and combines that with awesome knowledge. Sure some of his articles come off as snobby and one sided, but for the most part, he writes incredibly well.

Where exactly does he say that he knew MCW was going to be a star? I watched him at draft night when Bennett got selected 1st, so you can't argue that he thought Bennett was going to be a great pick.

Again, his problem was the moves that he did make, not the ones in which he was handcuffed.

I think the handcuff excuse was greatly exaggerated.

I don't want to keep a GM who did a bad job during a tough time.

I think I heard that Smith & Bynum played a part in Cheeks ouster, looks like both were trying accelerate Joe's departure tonight.

Bynum does seem to like Loyer. Jennings liked Cheeks better.

Shouldn't the Pistons have hired a GM to work "under" Joe these past few off-seasons to at least assist him?

All NBA organizations have large staffs.

The top couple of guys under Joe are Assistant General Manager George David and Director of Basketball Operations Ken Catanella. I'm not sure how much influence these guys have with Joe and Gores.

You don't have to justify it to the fan base. You certainly don't have to justify anything when you win.
