If we resign Monroe and let Stuckey/Charlie V go how much will we have in the off-season?

Watching today's Pistons v Pacers game showed me that we absolutely need a knockdown shooter and a shot creator. They showed a lot of toughness and a no quit attitude that I haven't see from them in a while but we missed a lot of wide open shots.

Would we have enough to afford someone like Rudy Gay if we let Stuckey and Charlie V go, even if we re-signed Monroe?

Rudy Gay is just another dude in a long line of players that shoot way more shots than they should. The Pistons don't need any more volume scorers, they need efficient ones.

I thought you wanted a knock down shooter. On what planet does Rudy Gay equal a knockdown anything?

Let's see how DaTome and Kentavious develop their outside shots this season first.

Jennings can also shoot the 3 at a decent clip plus we still have Chauncey for at least this season as well.

We may have those required shooters on the squad already.

Let's give it a bit of time.

Assuming we reup Greg Monroe at about $12M/yr we should have about $7 or $8 Mill of cap space left.

I agree with you about giving it some time but assuming we do make the playoffs this year, I don't think we have enough firepower to beat the top teams like Golden State, Miami or the Pacers. Also, I understand what you're saying about Rudy Gay but I think he would actually thrive here in Detroit because he'd actually get open looks since teams like to pack the paint against us.

Also, if not Rudy Gay, how about making a move for Wilson Chandler? I actually want Harrison Barnes but I don't see that happening for Charlie V/Stuckey's expiring contracts.

Here's some FA swing players that will hit the market next summer:

At the mid to high end of our budget:
    Lance Stephenson?
    Jamal Crawford?
    Gordon Hayward?
    Evan Turner?
    Shawn Marion?
    Chandler Parsons?
    Granny Danger?
    Caron Butler?
    Metta World Peace?
    AK-47?
    Trevor Ariza?

At the low end of our budget:
    Jordan Hamilton?
    Francisco Garcia?
    Wes Johnson?
    Garrett Temple?
    Glen Rice Jr.?
    Alonzo Gee?
    Omri Caspi?
    Jae Crowder?
    Kris Middleton?
    Draymond Green?

Not a very appealing class :(. The only one I would seriously go after is Gordon Hayward, but I highly doubt the Jazz let him go. If we're gonna make moves I think we have to center it around our expiring contracts.

Draymond Green could be attractive at the right price.
His per minute defensive stats are pretty insane if I remember correctly.

Would Hayward be a better option for this team than Monroe? Wing scorer, can't defend but with Smith and Drummond....Just thinking out loud.

The "fit" might be better but Monroe is a much better player. Also, a dude with his size and skill set is a much more valuable comodity than Hayward.

We are going in a defense first direction. Last thing we need is a wing player that can't defend. Instead of trying to match other teams firepower (which we can't btw), we need to emphasize our strengths. We need a D+3 guy. Pope seems to be headed in that direction. If he doesn't pan out, we need to go after the Thabo Sefalosha & Arron Afflalos of the world. Not Rudy Gays.

The core for this team right now is Jennings-Pope-Smith-Moose-Drummond. That's a very good defensive unit. We don't need to score 100 points a game. Scoring 71 pts is enough if we don't let the other team get past 70.

True. His whining is starting to get on my last nerve though.

Why anyone would pay money for Rudy Gay is beyond me unless you have literally no other scoring options on the team.

I still think we should have gotten Kyle Korver. Alonzo Gee iirc can hit the 3 ball

If Joe could somehow add Wilson Chandler to THIS team it would be a coup and I think we can definitely contend for the EC next season.

I don't understand why people continue to talk about Wilson Chandler. Afaict, the guy hasn't done anything remotely remarkable in this league since he was drafted.

Because he's a 6'8" athletic SF who plays very efficient. Solid defender aswell.

But again, I don't understand what is so remarkable about him. He doesn't even necessarily win the starting job on the teams he has been on.

A 6'8" SF, relatively athletic, decent shot, good rebounder and defender. Last year in Denver he Played 25 mpg (off the bench):
    Averaged 13 ppg (FG- 46.2%, 3FG- 41.3%, FT- 79%)
    5.1 rpg
    Again...off the bench.
Essentially I think he'd be a better option than Kyle Singler for that particular role on THIS team.

Just seems to me that Singler and his marginal minutes is not an area we're going to need a big improvement.

I dunno. Every year I hear about this Wilson Chandler guy and every year, he's barely playing some bit role somewhere.
