I'm about a cinical as they come but I firmly believe that it's as bad as it's gonna get right now. Things WILL be different next year.
At the beginning of next season, we are going to have three brand new starters. Only Monroe and Knight will be returning from the starting five this season:
    C - Drum
    PF - Money
SF - lotto pick or free agent
SG - lotto pick or free agent
    PG - Jose (if re-signed) or BK7
    1. - That lost first rounder will be an insignificant pick in the teens or low 20s. Those picks and/or players of that calibur are easy to come by. Thank god for the fact that the Charlotte Bobcraps will be paying Ben Gordon $14 mil next year and not us.
    2. - If the Pistons want to, there's still time to convince Greg Monroe that staying in Detroit for the long haul is worth doing. If not, he's a very tradeable piece.
    3. - The pressure's on Joe to either make the playoffs next season or be fired. I like that his back is against the wall. Joe now has to move past his loyalty to former Piston players factoring into his decision making process when it comes to the roster. Every move he makes has to be effective if he wants to keep his job. He's spent all of that '04 championship collateral that he had. His back is against the wall.

With Drummond and Brandon Knight out, that's 2 of the 5 players that should be starting. That's essentially 40% of an already bad starting lineup that the Pistons are without.

I disagree. We will largely be the same team. We will fail to get a high priced FA then resort to plan be which is overpaid mid tier guys. One of them will be Maxiell for a $4 million / year rate. We will wonder why Shabazz cannot push Singler out of a starting job.

If we re-sign Maxiel, I will be very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very disappointed.

I like Max as a Vet Minimum guy.
...4th or 5th big off the bench.

I hope we DON'T get a high priced FA this summer.
IMO, there aren't a lot of free agents that deserve to be "high priced" in this crop.
I'm down with waiting until 2014 if that's what it takes.

...dude, trust me. It ain't gonna be worse than it is right now.
...and there is NO POSSIBLE WAY that Kyle Singler is the starting SF next year unless the Pistons have some sort of injury pandemic.

If Drummond does not come back, and we end up with a pick from 5-8, we will end up with a good drafted wing player.

Either way, I would like Dumars to explore the possibility of Tony Allen.

JD ventured into the FA market.........he's done.
Now its time to lock in Stuckey for extra years before he decides to bolt.
I'm sure he already dealing with Max.
CV is considered an important cog in our future plans.
Somebody say hi to Ford Gores for me........... if you see him.

At this point, I wouldn't draft Shabazz anywhere in the lottery. Team killer.

We shouldn't splurge, but I want maybe two signings. Maybe Jarrett Jack and lobby for Millsap. That CAN'T cost a whole lot, and each of our three main bigs would still get at least 30 minutes between them, despite one coming off the bench.

I am souring on Shabazz very quickly though. Even guys like Burke and Porter are at least 2 years away from being ready to see even a limited amount of time on an NBA court.

Gee....I thought that was his job. Knowing how to construct a team via coaches, trades, FA and draft picks.
Stuckey (8.5M) is a head case and thus is far too inconsistent to work with any unit on the floor. He's gone.
CV (8M) is gone because lack of athleticism and face-up 3 pt. shooters are a dime-a-dozen. He's gone.
    Max (5M) should be gone, a 6-5 in-between everything.
Bynum is no longer a cheap substitution (3.25 M) for what he brings.
Jerebko is no longer a cheap substitution (4.5M) for what he brings.
    _______________________
Calderon (11M) should be negotiated down to 8 M (the big pitch to him is that he is still a starter)
    Drummond (2.3 M)
    Monroe (3.2M)
Knight (2.6M) depend on what happens over summer; a valuable 1-2 substitute
    Kravtsov (1.5M)
    Singler (1M)

So for roughly nearly 18.6 M, JD has something to work with and Gores will soon run out of excuses.

Your plan is solid, do you think JD will do much of those removals....
I just think that my plan has an equal chance........In JDs eyes...:)

    3/25 update

    11. Philadelphia (27/42) (4-6 last 10 games)
    10. Washington (26/44) (7-3)
    9. Toronto (26/44) (3-7)
    8. Minnesota (24/44) (3-7)
    6t. New Orleans (25/46) (4-6)
    6t. Sacramento (25/46) (4-6)
    5. Detroit (25/47) (1-9)
    4. Phoenix (23/48) (2-8)
    3. Cleveland (22/47) (2-8)
    2 .Orlando (18/53) (1-9)
    1. Charlotte (16/54) (3-7)

Washington goes on a 7-3 tear and moves from 3rd to 10th. Textbook case of how NOT to build a team in the long-term. I'm gonna be irritated if they miracle the lottery.

Still a logjam between 3rd and 8th, though - everyone's fighting real hard on this thing. Detroit's driving the tank well, but they've had a brutal schedule and they're going to have to put some effort into it if/when Andre Drummond comes back and they finish with their easy stretch. There's still a long way to go in this season and I expect that the Pistons are going to do what they do and screw up royally.

Drummond will have to bring the bongos onto the court to avoid adding significant value.

Not if it was left up to him. If it is, then he has a significant chance of being replaced next year, right along with Lawrence.

    4/1 update

    10. Washington (27/46) (6-4)
    9. Toronto (27/46) (3-7)
    6t. Sacramento (27/47) (5-5)
    7. Minnesota (26/46) (4-6)
    6. New Orleans (26/48) (4-6)
    5. Detroit (24/50) (1-9)
    4. Phoenix (23/51) (1-9)
    3. Cleveland (22/50) (1-9)
    2 .Orlando (19/55) (1-9)
    1. Charlotte (17/56) (4-6)

Detroit is solidly in control of fifth place, and with a schedule coming up where they control their own destiny - they play Toronto, Minnesota, Cleveland, and Charlotte. Orlando, Cleveland, Phoenix, and Detroit are all on fire (the other meaning of "on fire"), though, so Detroit is having a difficult time moving up. Add to that the fact that they're getting Drummond back and actually resembling a team, and I'm hoping they just hang on the rest of the way. They aren't out of the woods yet.

Drummond is going to single handedly win a game or two.

Another way to look at it:

    1. Charlotte
    2. Orlando 1.5 GB
T3. Phoenix 5.5 GB (Have lost 6 in a row)
T3. Cleveland 5.5 GB (Have lost 8 in a row)
    5. Detroit 6.5 GB
    6. New Orleans 8.5 GB (Beat Cleveland yesterday)

Phoenix and Cleveland are really holding their own right now...tanking at its finest.

Phoenix has a couple of games with Houston and a game with Minnesota...all potential non-tanks.

Cleveland has games with Charlotte and Philly...possible wins.

New Orleans had a nice win over the Cavs yesterday to give the Pistons a little breathing room.

Next Wednesday, April 10 appears to be a huge game: Detroit at Cleveland
