I watched tonight's game with this thread in mind. I think the Pistons are going to be good this year, like 5th in the East.

I think @ KGREG hit the pro for paying Monroe with the OKC/don't rock the boat theory. The Pistons were tough to handle when they alternated going to Smith and Monroe in the post this evening and I think they can do that across the league.

Monroe made some nice moves and hit shots. I don't think he was double teamed once though.

I heard Bill Simmons talking about a Ryan Anderson & Eric Gordon for Moose and an expiring.
    ...I say nah.
Ben Eric Gordon might have the worst contract in the NBA.

I'd just suggest that we go heavily into luxury tax territory with Gores' money. Is that an option?

For his revitalization this franchise, Greg deserves all the riches in the land. Because of him, we are not merely in the midst of another Detroit Basketball Renaissance, but something greater. His brilliance is an amalgamation of the technical prowess of JS Bach, the stoicism of Posidonius, and the leadership and mettle of Henry V. Posterity will not see another Greg Monroe for many years.

Eric Gordon is usually healthy 20 games a year.

In your/our dreams. $60 Mil over 5 years would be a steal! Probably end up being $65M, but I wouldn't be surprised if he got $70M.

Yea...with JD writing the checks...that's Stuckey's next contract. Moose will need 65 million.

The Secret Service, CIA, or Navy SEALS wouldn't be able to keep Dumards alive if that happens. I don't care if Rodney is the NBA MVP, while leading us to a 16-0 playoff record championship in which he is crowned Finals MVP!

I see it playing out this way:

David Falk (Monroe's agent): (phone rings); Hello?

Joe Dumars: Heya David, I know that there haven't been any teams that have expressed interest yet or made any offers, but I wanna talk about Greg's contract.

    Falk: ...I'm listening

Dumars: How about 5 years - $60 million?

Dumars: Wait!, 5 years $68 million?

Dumars: Ok, hang on, allright, 6 years -$100 million!

Keep in mind now the players share of revenue has dropped from 57% to between 49-51% in the comming years. And the lux tax is starting to get more and more punitive in succesive years hitting past offenders especially hard.

I like Moose and all but 60 mil for a 15/10 guy who cant block shots is way too much. Maybe in the old CBA but not now. I really do not want to risk not being able to sign Drummond. Figure by 14-16 the hard cap will be around 80 mil more of less which can go pretty fast.

Can we afford to have all 3 front coury players making 13-15/mil/yr?

Max.......did you not just see Bucks gave Larry Sanders a 4 year $44M deal, or the Pelicans give Tyreke Evans $44M over 4 years? It's weird how the owners play hard ball when negotiating the CBA and then come right back and dole out bloated contracts anyway.

I think a lot of it depends on how well we do over the next two years. If our core ends up being a really good one with championship possibilities, then Moose/Dre/Smith would be more willing to stick around, which could lead to them resigning here for less money than they can make elsewhere.

These are the kind of contracts teams will be trying to trade for cap space a couple of years from now.

Given that Josh Smith is actually useful at BOTH ends of the court, I'm thinking Monroe might deserve a little less than what J-Smoove got.

Does Monroe do anything better than Smith? His rebounding percentage is a little bit higher but that could be explained by him playing PF/C compared to Smith SF/PF. Maybe decisions? Certainly important, but other than that it seems like Smith does everything just as good or better on offense and Monroe is a horrific on defense compared to Smith who is elite.

I guess the most important factor is that Monroe is young and has the potential to improve. I wouldn't pay him Smith money unless he shows signs of progress this season though but if we start racking up wins I'm on the bandwagon.

Joe did a good job last summer.
Smith & Jennings have reasonable contracts.

The fact that Rodney makes $1 mil per year more than Jennings tells me that Joe has learned from his mistakes.

When you look down the list of Piston salaries, it's kind of hillarious.
With some noteable exceptions, it seems like each player's salary is inversely related to the actual value that they contribute to the team.

Ok. Monroe isn't getting a 5 year deal. Fact. Dumars is going to let him be an RFA and try and bait someone with a sign and trade if Monroe expresses that he really doesn't want to stay. Otherwise, the absolute worst case scenario is a 4 year rookie scale max extension which he would have gotten anyway. If no one else bids because they know we are just going to lock him up, then I still think he is worth $12 a year.

Sanders is pretty damn good and improving rapidly. Evans was strange but we may see a Curry-esque explosion from him.

    Smith is underpaid. Hugely underpaid.

That's not what the market thinks. The market thinks he got the best deal available.
