Tiger fans were blessed with this man for MANY years. RIP, Ernie. Hall of Fame Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell dies at 92 - ESPN
I started listening to the Tigers back in 1945 with Harry Heilmann. Then came Ernie in 1960, with Van Patrick between. It was Ernie and Paul Carey for many years. Just a great, great team. I still miss them both. God bless, Ernie!
He had a great life. I got to meet him and shake his hand once. He was a wonderful guy and great announcer. It's unbelievable that he was actually fired from his announcing job by Bo. I remember the headline in the paper "A Gentleman Wronged".
I feel the same way, and I didn't even grow up listening to him. Ernie Harwell, the Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame announcer, dead at 92 | freep.com | Detroit Free Press Ernie Harwell taking full advantage of opportunity to say his goodbyes - ESPN My moment with Ernie Harwell - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
Snoozing in a hammock under a cool shady tree listening to Ernie Harwell on a portable AM radio sounds pretty good right now. Thanks & R.I.P.!
That second link talks a lot about his agent Gary Spicer. Spicer is a really nice guy. He was my Sports Law professor. He spoke very highly of Ernie and Ernie spoke to our class one day. As an aside he was also the agent for others such as Kirk Gibson, Lem Barney, Pete Rose, and Alan Trammel. He spoke well of Tramell too. Lem was a real nice guy too and also spoke to our class. The other two (Rose and Gibson) he said were total jerks. Yeah, that article brought tears to my eyes. Ernie Harwell...gone...:(
Another tribute. Ernie was a beautiful human being. ForĀ 42 years, Ernie Harwell broadcast Detroit Tigers games - Joe Posnanski - SI.com
I would always lay with my head on the window sill next to the window screen in bed at night listening to him announce growing up. It's about the most nostalgic memory of my youth... hearing the crickets, feeling the wind, and drifting in and out of sleep trying to find out what was going to happen in the game.
Just reread the Mitch Album column written when Ernie was fired at age 72. Pretty good stuff: A GENTLEMAN WRONGEDBUSINESS DECISION COSTS TIGERS A TREASURE | mitchalbom.com
With his passing, I feel like I have lost a very good and longtime friend, even though I never met him.
