Not that many. If we got the average player on that list, it would be pretty great.

That is 4 guys in the last 34 years.

    And in that list:

Redick averaged 14 ppg with 3.8 assists and a .528 eFG% last season. He has improved his D and has turned into the offensive player that everyone thought he would be.

Laettner scored over 11,000 NBA points and was an all-star. He had 6 different seasons where he averaged more points per game than any Piston did last season.

So, I think the dud rate is about 2 in 34, or 5.9% chance. Judging by JD's quotes, I'm wondering whether he was scared to have another Mateen on his record. i.e. he was thinking that critics would blame him for picking a local guy if it didn't work out.

Comparison between results of Pope/ Oladipo/ Burke/ McLemore/ McCollum/ MCW/ and Shabazz so far per 36 min (i.e. all the guards that went early in the draft):

    Player: Pts/ Reb/ Ast/ Stl/ Blk/ TS%/ PER/ pick #
    Oladip: 16.7/ 5.3/ 4.6/ 2.1/ 0.9/ .511/ 13.6/ 2
    McLe: 14.4/ 4.3/ 1.6/ 1.2/ 0.3/ .492/ 10.8/ 7
    KPope: 12.3/ 3.5/ 1.6/ 1.6/ 0.1/ .455/ 10.4/ 8
    Burke: 16.6/ 4.3/ 5.4/ 1.0/ 0.0/ .481/ 15.4/ 9
    MCW: 17.3/ 5.7/ 7.2/ 3.1/ 0.7/ .495/ 19.0/ 11

#10 pick- CJ McCollum- out with foot surgery
#14 pick- Shabazz Mohammed- out with ankle injury. Hardly any minutes this year.

I like Pope, but so far, we got the lowest scoring, percentage, rebounding, and assist guard from the top of the draft. He was supposed to be a strong shooter and Oladipo was supposed to be the weak shooter (with a crazy outlier year at IND). Burke looking good with a .419 3P% so far.

Pope is a terrible shooter. There is no other way to explain it. No shooter is this cold for this long. And it's not like he's taking the toughest shots either.

I don't think the scouting reports described him accurately. He shoots a lot, he isn't a shooter. I like what he can do off the dribble though.

He reminds me of someone like Corey Brewer during his T-Wolves years with his assortment of long jumpers.

JJ Reddick didn't exactly light it up when he entered the league, nor did Danny Green. Last year it took Beal and Waiters a little while to get going too.

I think Pope will start hitting his shots at some point. His shot looks good. It's just a matter of time and his defense will keep him in the lineup until then.

He actually reminds me quite a bit of a more athletic, defensive oriented Allen Houston, as a rookie. Houston couldn't hit the broad side of a barn until he got a few bunnies...then watch out. Pope might be a guy who you need to get going, like Houston, and then he's lethal once he crosses half-court. It took a year or two to figure Houston out.

Doug Collins used to run a few baseline double screens for Houston, just to get him a couple of 10 footers from the short corner. After that, he would become a go-to guy.

    We'll see.

He is shooting 53% in the last three games. Maybe the KCP can't shoot hypothesis is fading and the KCP can shoot scouting report is starting to re-emerge,.

Dang......good call! I totally forgot how Houston looked in year 1! And Houston played 4 years of college ball compared to KCP's 2 years.
