Why is everybody so concerned about fouls per 48? You're all toeing Flip's company line. Young bigs foul a lot, it happens because. 1) They aren't going to get a fair whistle very often. 2) offensive players get the benefit of the doubt. 3) lots of guys are going to be taking it to the rack in the NBDL as they can't shoot or they'd be in the league. 4) If they are shotblockers they are just plain going to pick up some fouls. 5) They can easily get loose ball fouls or over the back fouls if they are aggressive. It's easier to learn not to foul than anything else in the game. Who cares if he picks up fouls? That's pretty much your role as the 3rd-5th big man.
Anybody know how much Samb weighs nowadays? With some more lower body bulk he could fill the Ratliff hole (end of the bench big) and go from there. I've always been a fan of his incredible shot-blocking instincts, I still remember that game against the Lakers when Bynum could not put the ball in the basket with Amir and Cheick taking turns rejecting him...
man i cant wait til samb gets in the rotation. i saw him play last summer in the summer league and he was really good. anybody know if he will still be in the d league this year? is dyess gonna retire this season? if so, maybe samb can come in there haha
Samb will be spending time between NBA and NBDL. Dyess has 2 more years left on his current deal, and I don't see him going anywhere.
Don't want to pick on you or anything, but should we not see how he plays before we decide where he plays? We still got summer league and camp yet. Supposedly, those are opportunities to earn time right there. Also, Curry said he will play some up here. What if he shows a drastic improvement? Still send him down to the D-League? Why? Samb is no youngster anymore. He came to us skinny, but not young. If he does not start contributing soon you might as well forget about it. I will be pulling for him to make at least a role as a spot player, replacing the sort of minutes Theo was getting after we acquired him last season.
have to agree for the most part with you word for word there... plus the minor leagues so to speak seem to be a small man offence style game so for him to take the next step its going to have to be against the big boys.. would like to see him used like we used amir last year as worst case example, like you said if he's not ready for that he probably will never be able to help us.
He is listed as 23, so age is not too big of an issue - if you believe that DOB. Samb probably works better with the more open/instinctive style of game that Stuck will generate this year. Plus those reports that Samb is spending lots of time in the weight-room are encouraging as well. Hard to see how he could be worse than Theo.
True, he's also in the final year of his 2 year rookie deal, Joe has to pay up next summer and the only way to find out if he's worth a long term investment is to play the MAN!!!!
Otherwise, it would be kind of like Amir - paying money on potential alone. I think we've heard more than enough of the "potential" stuff and want to see what these guys can actually do.
Yes and at some point he is going to get sick of it and will want to go somewhere that will play him. 7'ers with some skill are hard to come by these days. Samb is already better than many of the other 7' reserve players out there who actually were played by their coach. Anyone recall that game when Samb and Amir both played? I think it was against the Lakers. They were out there blocking shots, crashing the glass, and generally just frusterating the other team with their energy and athletisism. I thought we could have had something there but unfortunatly that was the only time they ever played together in a game time situation.
Shame, I thought the coaching staff would have tried it at least ONE more time over the course of a WHOLE SEASON!!!! just to see if it was a fluke or not.
Some interesting info in an article on Pistons.com in the series of article about the Summer League players: PISTONS: Ahead of Schedule So, he's going to get his shot this year. And he's really bulked up, just like we've hoped.
He needs more weight and little more development in my eyes. He has a nice jumper that hopefully will turn into a red-eye target for the basket and he learns a little more on the block and he will be great. His blocks and rebound are fine. I hope this year that he spends in the D-L he will come back strong and ready to rock those last 20-25 games in the regular season.
It will be tough to find minutes for him if the rest of the guys perform. There are already 5 bigs on the team all vying for the minutes.
