I don't see him as even the best "Bo" ever in sports and there weren't too many of those.

Nemo, this is America, we are graced with being allowed to have and voice our own personal opinions in any way that we desire.

(no matter how wrong they might be) :)

In his brief stint with the Raiders, 4 years, he averaged 5.4 yards per carry. That's more than any running back in the history of the sport.

    Walter Payton, 4.4
    Barry Sanders, 5.0
    Emmet Smith, 4.2
    Thurman Thomas, 4.2
    Jim Brown, 5.2
    Earl Campbell, 4.3
    Gale Sayers, 5.0
    Marshall Faulk, 4.3
    Red Grange, 3.3
    Eric Dickerson, 4.4
    OJ Simpson, 4.7

The above isn't in any specific order though there are at least 5 guys on it besides Bo that were more exciting than Smith.....

I would say Barry was better. It took Emmitt more carries and 2 more years just to beat Barry's record. If Barry had not retired he would still have the record to this day and most likely would have had 20,000 yards rushing for his career.

I compare Bo Jackson more to Gayle Sayers..Both had exceptional short careers. That makes it hard to compare them to the real top running backs in NFL history

I admire Barry Sanders a lot and think he was greatly misunderstood. I think he saw himself as a mercenary who took big risks and got big money, but he was never a slave to the football machine. He got paid to run with the ball and that's what he did, better than anyone else I've seen, but beyond that he did not take risks with his body. He did not like training camp, did not like catching passes, did not return kicks (even in a playoff game with the return guy hurt), and was a fairly effective blocker only because he could take a rushers legs out with his speed and agility. His whole running style was based on evading tackles and never getting hit really hard, he never ran up the middle for 1 or 2 yards, it didn't happen.

The ultimate goal of of any true mercenary is to live to fight another day and eventually enjoy spending the money that's been stashed away. Barry Sanders lives a very comfortable life and his body is not ruined, I think he planned it that way and I say more power to him.

The NFL uses up a lot of players but Barry Sanders used the NFL, the NFL didn't use him.

    Agreed...nice post.

Calling him a mercenary might offend some...but it's right on target. :stirthepot:

Not me. I thought it was an interesting and pretty accurate perspective. Good post.

You weren't offended because I didn't refer to Barry as Lomas Brown's "little brother" :pound::pound::pound:

It's good to see you guys puffing out your chests again after that impressive win over powerhouse Western Michigan University. U of M is definitely back. I fully expect Michigan to be ranked in the AP top fifteen later today. If not, I am sure they will hear from the Wolverine fans.:pound:

I'll bet Notre Dame is shaking in their boots right now. I know that MSU is scared of you guys. :fear:

There will be no puffing until we're 6-0 this year. By then, things will be back to normal. I don't expect MSU to be concerned yet, but ND will be noticing us as their embattled coach has a lot on the line.
