This is really a question of the management style of the GM. Generally speaking though, the worst thing that a manager of managers (GM) can do is to try to micromanage the front line managers (coach). When a GM forces the coach's hand to play a certain player or bench this other guy, he is directly undermining the coach and it becomes quite a challenge for that coach to maintain control over their players. It basically sends a signal that the coach is on his way out IMO. Joe doesn't have a good track record with coaches, for sure. But I have not seen any evidence that he interferes with the coach (there are lots of speculations, and they are just that), and he never fired a coach mid-season. He puts assembles a team and then evaluates how it all works out. You want your GM to think in broad terms like that.
