At what point does a GM overrule his coach?

This is really a question of the management style of the GM. Generally speaking though, the worst thing that a manager of managers (GM) can do is to try to micromanage the front line managers (coach). When a GM forces the coach's hand to play a certain player or bench this other guy, he is directly undermining the coach and it becomes quite a challenge for that coach to maintain control over their players. It basically sends a signal that the coach is on his way out IMO.

Joe doesn't have a good track record with coaches, for sure. But I have not seen any evidence that he interferes with the coach (there are lots of speculations, and they are just that), and he never fired a coach mid-season. He puts assembles a team and then evaluates how it all works out. You want your GM to think in broad terms like that.

When a GM overrules his coach it's time to change coach or GM.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Certainly not calling for anyone's head or anything like that it was just a curiosity question.

Like was said KCP has only racked up one DNP-CD and DaTome was out all pre-season so no reason to stress at this point.

I think Cheeks will be more flexible than LB ever was and this roster is still not complete so things will probably still change a lot during this season.

Larry Brown won us a title, almost 2.

I will take some inflexibility if it means we win.

There is no perfect coach who plays the vets, and develops the youth, and wins titles and everyone is happy forever in a basketball wonderland.

C'mon. Nobody is going to fire coaches due to rookie minutes.

    That's ridiculous .

GM-s hire coaches and usually express very clearly what they expect from coaches. A hint: you do not hire Lawrence Frank caliber coaches for tanking for instance.

Wondering why Rodney Stuckey wasn't the center of discussion here, oh, I think he's so irrelevant that no coach is going to be fired by both playing and/or not playing him.

Popovich has very few rookies on his teams, although he is probably the closest thing. I'd say the exception, certainly not the norm.

Seems to be an issue with the Chicago Bulls right now:

Looks like those DNP-CD's are starting to rack up for KCP not to mention we are losing games.
