I have no idea how Jalen Rose's star has risen to the point where he's a lead studio analyst for THE major NBA broadcast network.
...I think that Bruce Bowen pretty much sucks too.

On a similar note; IMO - Chris Webber is very good.

Jalen gives good inside poop about what it's like to be an NBA player. I've watched podcasts on Grantland with Jalen that were eye-opening. I've not heard anyone else talking about the stuff he talks about. I think a big reason for this is that Simmons et al on Grantland are asking questions from a fan perspective rather than the stuffed shirt sportswriter/NBA marketing department perspective.

Overall I like Simmons, I think his style is refreshing. I just thought this interview was him coming out with a big snarky comment at the beginning and then the rest of it was mostly him backpedaling so as not to come across as a big jerk.

And maybe Jalen is just throwing big words out there, but I also love the insight into the X's and O's of what the teams are doing rather than the generic formulaic cliches I'm used to hearing.

Simmons is terrible on TV because he offers no insight when he speaks but he can't stop himself from interrupting and talking.

I wouldn't be surprised if they call him Baby Shaq around the set.

Bad coaching and "guys afraid of the moment" are all he gives you and whoever wears those labels flips from series to series.

His NBA columns (if he still writes them) are bad now also.

LOL at Shaq calling Charles a "butt face" on TNT's after-game show last week.

Magic will be talking about the unusual pressures that LeBron faces in a series and what it's like dealing with that.

Jalen Rose won't dare say anything because it is not his place, but Basketball Billy starts tugging on Rose's jacket while Magic is still talking so he can say "He needs to be like MJ but he doesn't have a Phil Jackson."

Magic is an awesome analyst now. Remember how bad he was doing color when he first retired?

Magic might be the only ex-player who isn't afraid to call a current player out for sucking.
(Charles does it but he does it in a comedic way that alows him to get away with it.)

During the Memphis/SA G3 Bill Simmons claimed that the Griz fans were on edge not because they blew an 18-20 pt lead but because MLK's assassination in the 60's made them think something bad was always around the corner.

Shaq is really bad also. I think TNT figured out how to best use him and minimize the damage he causes as the year went on.

Shaq has to be larger than life which makes it impossible for him to sit there and be the 4th man like Magic, CWebb and Reggie Miller could.

    Totally agree.
Charles already plays the role of "Shaq" on that set and he plays it much better.

I always found Shaq to be awkward and boring and Kazam was a (expletive) movie.
(DISCLAIMER: I make this observation regarding Kazam having never actually seen the movie. I'm totally basing my opinion on second hand accounts of this film.)

One thing for certain, I will still would rather see Shaq challenge Barkley and have Barkley tell it like it is on TNT as opposed the ABC/ESPN crew of Wilbon, Rose, Magic and Simmons do their talk their discussions. They seem to always take a side as who they "want" to win as opposed to being neutral.

The crew on NBA TV where C-Webb does some of his work after Shaq squeezed him from the TNT crew is better than ABC/ESPN guys. Wilbon does his best work on PTI and should stay there.

I don't get the studio talk on my league pass but with Russillo not doing his own pod anymore Simmons and Jalen have the best NBA podcasts.

Despite what I've said this current NBA studio crew on ABC/ESPN is better than anything they've had. It's a low bar to clear but still.........

I still miss Al Michaels and his ABC play by play in the 2004 and 2005 NBA finals. He was smooth with his call, where is Mike Breen gets too excited with his Bang (for 3 pointers etc) ... I could have sworn he was a Miami heat broadcast homie the way he got excited about the Heat pulling away in the third and forth.

All I remember was that Al was smooth and neutral in his delivery of the Pistons-Laker series and the same the next year in the Pistons-Spurs series.

Yes, he and Doc Rivers were gold by ABC (sub)standards.

Breen is terrible with all his bogus, "Oh, that's a hard foul!" or "He better be careful here. He already has one (BS) T.".

Kevin Harlan does a good job with his play-by-play.
Marv Albert is IMO still one of the best!

For color guys; Doug Collins is outstanding.
I think Bill Raftery is the best in the bidness but he only does NCAA hoops on a national level. I always try and watch the Nets broadcasts whenver the Pistons are playing them on NBALP (Raftery does BKNY games).

I usually use my DVR to blow right through the studio shows.

Anybody is better than Steven A. Smith.

I actually like the TNT crew. I think all broadcasters are a waste of time anyways, but at least Charles has entertainment value. Shaq, meh.
