It is freeing to stop worrying about Gores' personal wealth.

I want my owner to spend himself into oblivion. Illitch did it with the Red Wings and it was GLORIOUS.

That's not the question. They would represent around 45% of the total allowable salary between the two.

Would the remainder, incl going over the cap, be enough to make a championship team with those two as the foundation?

What constraints would there be if we don't worry about the luxury tax?

AFAIK, there is no hard upper limit on salaries. Mind you, I was a capologist many years ago, and my understanding may be very out of date.

I don't think you can build a championship team when two of your maxed out players are flawed players.

The lux tax is so punative that other owners will probably get on you if you go over consistently.

You can only go over the salary cap to resign existing players. - remember we were talking about bird rights?

With the cap at around $100m next year and a theoretical max of around $30m you could sign one more "max max" guy and use the remaining $25ish million to shore up the rest of the team. Or you sign two high 20m players and then just go deep into luxury tax a-la Brooklyn 3-4 years ago by resigning the players on your team which you hold the bird rights to.

For the purpose of this exercise you would have to assume that everyone's contract expired at the end of this season.

Amount over tax /Standard tax per excess dollar /Repeat offender tax per excess dollar
    $4,999,999 or less /$1.50 /$2.50
    $5 million to $9,999,999 /$1.75/ $2.75
    $10 million to $14,999,999 /$2.50/ $3.50
    $15 million to $19,999,999 /$3.25/ $4.25
    Over $20 million/ $3.75 + $0.50 per $5 million/ $4.75 + $0.50 per $5 million

So if you go over by say $4.9999m you pay ~$7.5m in tax. So hypothetically, if you have a lux cap at $120m and $124.9999* in salary, you will end up paying $132.5m including the tax in the first year.

Go deep into the tax and you will know about it. $140m payroll will actually end up paying $215m in the first year and $235 in the second.

Luxury tax in salary limits is just forcing diminishing marginal utility in an attempt to level out the playing field e.g. adding a vet to your team at the vet min won't cost $1.5m, it will cost ~$7m. And this money gets distributed to all of your competitors to help them...

We are not getting any max players you can build a championship team around and we are probably not getting any better players for $20M than KCP.

Both Leuer and Tobias Harris have front-loaded contracts.

Whilst Leuer has not been playing well, Harris might actually have some serious value.

Ellenson is going on a 2 day road trip to Ft Wayne(!) after playing for them on Wednesday in the D-League. Is he going for some award? Is he going to make the All-League team? He's been a full time player for them, hasn't he?

Would it be too much to ask him to fly out after the game? Again, there's no part of our management that says, 'Hey, we're playing the Nets tomorrow. We might blow them out. Maybe we could play Henry?'

#Pistons rookie @HenryEllenson13 will play for @grdleague Wednesday, travel for Friday-Saturday games vs. Fort Wayne, SVG says

If by some miracle we actually blow out the Nets, how much of an impact would playing Ellenson for 80 seconds of garbage actually be?

Those 80 seconds are the difference between being a Carp fisherman and a Kickboxer.

Nothing gets me more fired up than getting the 14th pick while not playing your rookies.

The primary focus for the season seems to be to simply make the playoffs.

That's what happens when your two highest paid players don't live up to their hype.

I think we should consider shutting down Reggie Jackson for the rest of the season regardless we make the playoffs or not. He's definitely not healthy and not helping the team. Hopefully, he will be back to his 2015/2016 self next season if SVG decides to keep him.

You never know, but I think it is highly unlikely SVG could move him.

The way RJ has played since he came back, no one it going to be excited to take on his contract, even if it is basically for free.

As with many things, our best bet may be to wait and pray for improvement all around. There is no trade path to excellence with this CBA and this roster today.

It's a good thing he didn't exacerbate it coming back early. Playing with a knee less that 100% is not something I would do. I'd wait for it to feel fully healed and then would wait another month.
