A really good article covering the pro and con of the Pistons roster. Some quotes I enjoyed.

I couldn't decide if your quote or this one deserved that tag.

I am not sure what bothers me more, that people think that article was good (confirmation bias?) or that he managed to write the entire piece based around mistakes, errors and downsides.

If I bought into his view of the Pistons, I wouldn't watch a single game this year.

It's crazy how Lowe can be spot on so often. He knows every team like the hardcore fan who only follows that specific franchise.

I'm still amazed with all the weeping and gnashing of teeth done by this fan base about "small ball," we have a core of talented big men and the 1st suggestion is to trade the most dependable and productive one of the bunch for a "pure PG"...

I feel quite optimistic about player development this year because our coach is one of the best guards to ever play the game and his assistant is one of the best power forwards to ever play the game. And, they are both willing teachers. You can't ask for a better scenario than that for a team full of youngsters.

I have to agree with you. I watch all of last season and this article really does a job of extrapolating instances of mistakes made to represent the totality of these players' defensive abilities.

There were bigger problems than individual mistakes on certain plays and they were not indicative of the entire season from Knight and Monroe. Couple that with the fact that by Frank keeping Drummond on the bench, Monroe was forced into the position of cleaning up EVERYONE's messes and even Ben Wallace couldn't effectively do that until we got Rasheed.

I won't even go into the assertion that somehow you can look into Knight's eyes and deduct how he's processing defensive reactions... :detective:

I think some fans feel dirty being a fan of a bad team, and articles like this provide a sort of rationalization/intellectual cover to validate that the team is bad, and it's made by someone else so it's not like any loyalties are betrayed.

Sure, the Pistons are not a good team. They have players that make a lot of mistakes. They don't put up great numbers or have many inspiring performances.

But this is cherry picking of the highest order. You can do this to ANY team in the league. You can catch Tim Duncan missing a play on any given night.

The standard presented here is near perfection or bust, and basketball has never been played that way.

I totally disagree. I thought he did a good job highlighting the positive of signing Smith as well as the shift for the better the organization has taken since Gores took over.

I bet you could turn on any of the games that Monroe and Knight played in last year and see multiple examples each game of what he's pointing out in this article.

Monroe doesn't play D with his hands at his side? He isn't horrible (absolutely horrible) defending pick and rolls?

Knight doesn't toss the ball 10' in front of him to try and drive to the rim?

Lowe's point of Knight cutting off his own pick and roll was brilliant analysis in my opinion. To infer that he's some sort of hater is way off base to me. He wrote an article on the Pistons for crying out loud!!!

I think the point is that the Pistons make those specific mistakes over and over again, and when you add them all up, they create the FREE CHILI defense that has been on display for the past several seasons. Tweets Villanueva may be the worst offender, but all the players as well as the defensive system are culpable.

I didn't see the article of being critical of the Pistons, in fact, I saw it as the opposite. He pointed out major flaws and then pointed out the way the organization is addressing them, and how they could improve.

As a fan of a bad team, it doesn't upset me. It makes it better in fact. I would watch the Pistons and wonder why the hell every single team in the NBA could shoot near 60% and still consistently dunk on my boys. Zach Lowe points out some of the reasons and ways to fix it. Good. Let's fix it. Bring back No Free Chili.

No Flip Flops, and No Free Chili.
Andre Drummond and Josh Smith will dunk on your head.

I think at the NBA level, basketball is always played near perfection or bust.
